Abstract For three series of bimodal networks, the stress-relaxation rates and the tearing energies were shown to exhibit maxima at about the same concentrations of short chains as those at which the tensile strengths, reported earlier, also exhibit maxima. These findings clearly show that the reinforcement produced b…

Terfenol (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9) and related materials have proven useful as electromechanical transducers. As with other transducers, these materials exhibit hysteresis, which must be included in any model of the transducer. Preisach theory is one of the available models that includes the effects of hysteresis. The theory…

Magnetic properties of melt-spun Co80Zr20−xBx microcrystalline alloys (0≤x≤8) depend crucially on the quench rate. The optimized values of Hc =2.68 kOe and (BH)max =2.10 MG Oe were obtained for Co80Zr16B4 melt-spun with the substrate surface velocity of 48 m/s. A new crystalline phase of Co5Zr was observed.

The 2:17 magnet alloys form a complex metallurgical system with a large number of interactive compositional and heat-treating variables. A model for the metallurgical behavior of these alloys was proposed by the author in 1983. Subsequent experiments designed to test that model have verified some aspects, significantl…

A number of photochromic spiropyrans and spirooxazines containing mesogenic groups were synthesized. Only one of them, spiro-indoline-naphthoxazine with mesogenic substituent, 4-(4-heptylbenzoyloxy)benzoyloxy in 5-position, revealed mesomorphic properties. Its phase behaviour, photochromism and alignment in the electr…

The encapsulation of liquid crystals in a polymer matrix produces a material with interesting and potentially useful optical properties. The earliest efforts generated a dispersed phase whose dimensions were comparable to optical wavelengths and therefore afforded materials which were highly scattering. These material…
