Division Rates of Salt Marsh Diatoms in Relation to Salinity and Cell Size

Richard B. Williams1964-10-01Ecology

Fourteen species of motile pennate diatoms obtained from a Georgia salt marsh were cultured under uniform conditions (19°—20°C, 16,000—23,000 lux) in soil—water medium at salinities between 1 and 68 %. All species grew well over at least the range of 10 to 30%; several species grew well over the entire salinity range.…

Surface Charge of Alumina and Magnesia in Aqueous Media

M. Robinson、Joseph A. Pask、D.W. Fuerstenau1964-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

By streaming potential measurements, the zero point of charge (zpc) of or‐Al 2 O 3 having a fully hydroxylated surface was found to occur at pH 9.2 ± 0.2. By calcining the alumina at temperatures above 1000°C, the zpc was lowered to about pH 6.7. By aging the calcined material in water at room temperature for a period…

Refractive Indices of Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate and Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate between 2000 Å and 15 μ

F. Zernike1964-10-01OpenAlex

The refractive indices of ADP and KDP have been measured at 25 wavelengths between 2138 Å and 1.529 μ, and at 24.8°C. The measured values have been corrected to give absolute indices. Curves have been fitted to the measured and to the corrected data. The measured and the computed data are given both in air and in vacuu…

ESR Studies and the Electronic Structure of Vanadyl Ion Complexes

Daniel Kivelson、S. Lee1964-10-01OpenAlex

The ESR spectra of vanadyl acetylacetonate and tetraphenylporphyrin have been studied in various liquid solvents and frozen glasses. The spectra have been analyzed and the components of the g tensor and of the vanadium hyperfine interaction tensors have been determined, and for the porphyrin the nitrogen extrahyperfin…

Surface Oxides of Carbon

H.P. Boehm、E. Diehl、Wolfgang Heck 等 4 位作者1964-10-01OpenAlex

Abstract On oxidation of graphitic carbon, acidic surface oxides (or hydroxides in the presence of water) are formed at the boundaries of the carbon layers. It was found that the reaction of oxygen with microcrystalline carbon at 400–450°C yields four groups of different acidities. One strongly acidic group and one we…

Resistivity Anomaly in Doped Barium Titanate

Walter Heywang1964-10-01OpenAlex

The barrier‐layer model previously proposed to explain the anomalous increase in resistivity that occurs in doped BaTiO 3 has been reexamined in the light of data obtained from more recent experiments. The picture thus obtained describes correctly and quantitatively the resistivity anomaly and the frequency and voltag…

Interaction Between Particles and a Solid-Liquid Interface

D. R. Uhlmann、B. Chalmers、Kenneth A. Jackson1964-10-01OpenAlex

The interaction between particles and an advancing solid-liquid interface has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. For each particular type of particle, a ``critical velocity'' was observed, below which the particles are rejected by the interface, and above which they are trapped in the solid. The…

The dynamic Jahn—Teller effect in octahedrally co-ordinated d 9 ions

Mary C. M. O'Brien1964-09-22Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Abstract The nature of the electronic-vibrational states of a d9 ion in an octahedral complex is discussed in term s of an adiabatic model in which th e electronic motion follows the nuclear motion exactly. Expressions for the g-values and the hyperfine structure parameters of the e.s.r. spectrum at high and low tempe…

Pressure Dependence of the Resistance of VO2

C. H. Neuman、A. W. Lawson、Richard F. Brown1964-09-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The resistance of VO2 through the semiconductor-to-metal transition has been measured as a function of hydrostatic pressure. The transition has been studied in pure and partially hydrated single crystals of VO2 and in powdered VO2. The temperature of the transition is shifted by less than 0.5 C° by pressures up to 6×1…

Behavior of Fused-Ring Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Very High Pressure

R. B. Aust、William Henry Bentley、H. G. Drickamer1964-09-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The effect of very high pressure has been studied on the electronic structure of some fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbons. The material most thoroughly studied is pentacene. Observations include optical absorption of the low-energy peaks and electrical resistance. The optical absorption peaks of tetracene and pentacene s…

Effect of Pressure on the Volume and Lattice Parameters of Magnesium

G. L. Clendenen、H. G. Drickamer1964-09-14Physical Review

The effect of pressure to 300 kbar has been measured on the volume and on the lattice parameters ($c$ and $a$) of the hcp magnesium lattice. The $a$ axis compresses in a regular manner, but the $c$ axis compresses relatively rapidly to 70 kbar, then becomes continuously more incompressible in the range 70-120 kbars, w…
