Ferromagnetic resonance has been observed in single crystals of the family La 1−x Pb x MnO 3 with 0.25 < x < 0.45 from 13 to 25 GHz and in the temperature range from 77 to 430 °K. The line width, ΔH, exhibits a sharp minimum accompanied by an isotropic shift in the resonance line at a critical temperature, T c .…

The paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Tb 4+ in zircon shows that Tb 4+ ions enter the tetragonal lattice substitutionally for zirconium. The 8 S 7/2 ground-state splittings are 23 times as large as those for Gd 3+ in this mineral, totalling nearly 10 cm −1 .

Abstract Sediment samples from cores taken in the Gulf of Mexico were subjected to normal laterally confined loads of 0.5, 4.0, 32.0, and 64.0 kg per cm 2 . Electron micrographs of their microstructure show the progressive change in particle orientation during the laboratory consolidation of a sediment sample. A predo…

Abstract Infrared spectroscopy studies were undertaken to determine the effects of ultraviolet light radiation on a methylsiloxane resin. The results indicate that SiCH 2 Si linkages were formed as a result of irradiation at wavelengths above 281 mμ from a xenon are lamp; on the other hand, SiOH and SiCH 2 CH 2 Si li…

Studies of the EPR of dilute Mn2+ in CsPbCl3 have been carried out over the temperature range 77°–340°K. Crystalline phase changes as indicated by changes in the Pb site symmetry were evident at 320°K (46.5°C) and 185°K. The first of these has been reported previously while the latter is apparently a new observation.…

Abstract The kinetics of the reaction between water and MgO powders has been investigated at 9°, 18°, 28° and 38°C in a stirred batch reactor. Six commercial samples of MgO prepared from Mg(OH) 2 plus two of unknown origin, with specific surface areas of 12 to 80 m g /g, were studied. After correcting for particle siz…

A time-dependent relaxation model for the heat flux in metals is derived from the quantum mechanical form of the Boltzmann transport equation. In the derivation, the manipulation of the nonlinear integral term of the Boltzmann equation is simplified by assuming that the phonons are in thermal equilibrium at all times…

High‐temperature deformation in ZrC single crystals was studied. Seeded crystals were grown by a direct rf‐coupling floating‐zone process. Yield stresses were measured from 1080° to 2000°C as a function of stress axis orientation. The Burgers vector was shown to be parallel to the 〈110〉 axes by transmission electron m…

There is some ambiguity in the interpretation of internal photoemission experiments because of the possible contribution of hole emission from the anode in addition to the cathode electron emission. Furthermore, correction of the photocurrent spectra for optical intensity variations is essential to determination of ph…

Abstract Polytypism in trioctahedral 1 : 1 phyllosilicates results from two variable features in the structure.
