Mie scattering calculation to support theory that interstellar extinction is caused by graphite particles
The Rosseland mean due to Compton scattering at temperatures ranging from kT = 0.01mc2 to kT = 0.35mc2 and for densities ranging from p = 10 gm/cm2 to p = 106 gm/cm2 is calculated. In most of this semidegenerate region, Compton scattering dominates over electron conduction, bound-free transitions and free-free transit…
The energy of an extended dislocation is decreased if the energy of the stacking fault formed between its component partial dislocations is reduced. It is suggested that such an effect may influence the yield stress of an alloy containing coherent precipitates of lower stacking-fault energy than the matrix. The propos…
Polymers formed between three ligands and selected metal ions were prepared and their thermal stability in air was investigated. 1,5-Dihydroxynaphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (1,5-N-2,6) formed coordination polymers with Zn, Ni, Al, and Fe+3. Zn-1,5-N-2,6 was more stable than the corresponding Fe and Ni polymers. Pyr…
The dependence of the drape of fabrics on bending stiffness and shear stiffness has been investigated. A version of the Fabric Research Laboratories Drapemeter is described, and the drape coefficient obtained is used as a measure of the fabric drape. The regression of the drape coefficient on bending length for a larg…
A noncatastrophic fracture was shown to exist in the three‐point bending test with a “hard‐beam” machine when an artificially cracked or notched specimen was used. In this mode of fracture the energy produced by external work was transformed completely into the effective surface energy (fracture energy) of the specime…
Total surface area is a fundamental property of layer silicates, and it has been used as a cri-terion for identification. Early methods for de-termining surface area used nitrogen or ethane gas and were based on the principle that solid materials will adsorb a monomolecular layer of the gas at a particular pressure (4…
Phytoplankton the passively floating or weakly swimming plant life found in bodies of water is generally inconspicuous. It is of basic importance in lakes and seas, however, as the primary producer of the organic material on which other forms of aquatic life depend; and it is probable that its total photosynthetic out…
Abstract A new method of obtaining the kinetic parameters from thermogravimetric curves has been proposed. The method is simple and applicable to reactions which can not be analyzed by other methods. The effect of the heating rate on thermogravimetric curves has been elucidated, and the master curve of the experimenta…
Abstract The kinetics of the crystallization of isotactic polybutene‐1 from the melt and of the transformation of modification 2 to modification 1 are studied by dilatometric measurements. The isotherms of the polymorphous solid‐solid transformation show substantially the same features as those of crystallization. Con…
Abstract The crystallographic characteristics of deformation twinning are derived by considering the atomic movements which occur at the moving interface as a twin propagates. This is facilitated by making use of the notation of the tensor calculus, and general expressions, valid for all crystal structures, are obtain…
The normal-incidence reflection spectrum of cubic CdS has been measured for photon energies between 2 and 22 eV. The samples were prepared by epitaxial deposition on the {1\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}11} "As face" of GaAs. The lowest direct absorption edge produces a reflection peak at 2.50 eV at room temper…
Electron transport in thermally grown layers of Si${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ has been studied. Electrons are introduce into the oxide by photoemission from the adjoining silicon crystal. Specimens consist of a silicon crystal covered with an Si${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ layer about 2 microns thick and, over this, a semitransparent go…
The normal-incidence reflectance spectra of SrTi${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and BaTi${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and the optical constants derived by the Kramers-Kronig method are reported. These spectra are very similar to those of rutile. The strongest optical transitions ($A$) occur at about 4.4 eV: They are responsible for the dispe…
The infrared spectra of the anhydrous rare-earth nitrates are presented in the region 4000–100 cm−1. Strong coordination of the nitrate groups to the metal atom occurs. Possible different types of metal—oxygen bonding in these compounds is discussed.
Infrared-active lattice vibrational spectra of α-Al2O3 and Cr2O3 have been investigated by reflection and transmission measurements on single crystal samples and also by transmission on Nujol mulled Cr2O3. Single-crystal transmission data above 700 cm−1 have been assigned to combinations and overtones.

The transport properties of electrons in CdS grown with Group I impurities which show the phenomenon of "storage" have been studied to determine the mechanism of conduction. The mobility parallel to the $c$ axis at low temperature is of the order of 1 to 10 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$/ volt sec and is very anisotropic, the mo…
