Crystal nucleation in a three-dimensional Lennard-Jones system: A molecular dynamics study

M. J. Mandell、J. P. McTague、A. Rahman1976-05-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

We have observed crystal nucleation in a Lennard-Jones fluid by molecular dynamics. In a 108-particle system cooled slowly below its triple point, crystallization occurs at kT/ε=0.50 and 0.57 for densities Nσ3/V =0.90 and 0.91, respectively. For larger systems (256 and 500 particles) crystallization has also been achi…

Mathematical modeling of monolithic catalysts

R. H. Heck、James Cheng‐Chung Wei、James R. Katzer1976-05-01AIChE Journal

Abstract Mathematical models are developed which account for simultaneous heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemical reaction in the oxidation of carbon monoxide over platinum containing monoliths. A two‐dimensional model is shown to predict unusual behavior of the Nusselt number in the presence of rapid reaction. How…

Strength Degradation of Brittle Surfaces: Sharp Indenters

Brian R. Lawn、Edwin R. Fuller、Sheldon M. Wiederhorn1976-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A theory of strength loss for brittle surfaces in contact situations, developed in a previous paper for “blunt” indenters, is extended to the case of “sharp” indenters. A prior fracture mechanics analysis of crack growth beneath ideal cone indenters serves as the basis for predetermining the prospective surface degrad…

Light scattering and ir measurements in XS2 pryite-type compounds

E. Anastassakis、C. H. Perry1976-05-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The results of Raman scattering and reflectivity measurements of XS2 (X=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) transition metal dichalcogenides are reported. These compounds are expected to exhibit five Raman-active and five ir-active q?0 optical phonons in first-order processes. Measurements of light scattering at T?300 °K revealed at…

Abnormally low electromagnetic scattering cross sections*

H. Chew、Milton Kerker1976-05-01Journal of the Optical Society of America

We discuss the possibility of achieving abnormally low electromagnetic scattering cross sections at low frequencies by adjusting the optical properties of the scatterers (e.g., concentric spheres), generalizing the work in an earlier communication. The discussion is based upon an expansion valid for any spherical scat…

Reactions in Glass-Ionomer Cements: IV. Effect of Chelating Comonomers on Setting Behavior

A.D. Wilson、Stephen Crisp、A.J. Ferner1976-05-01Journal of Dental Research

The oscillating rheometer is a valuable instrument for studying the effects of additives on the setting behavior of a cement system. Using this instrument, it was found that certain chelating comonomers, the hydroxycarboxylic acids, could improve the setting characteristics of the glass-ionomer cement system when adde…

Nonmajor cubic symmetry axes of easy magnetization in rare-earth-iron Laves compounds

U. Atzmony、M.P. Dariel1976-05-01Physical review. B, Solid state

Unusual [$uuw$]- and [$uv0$]-type axes of easy magnetization have been observed in some cubic rare-earth-iron Laves compounds. The presence of these directions of spontaneous magnetization can be accounted for, within the phenomenological treatment of the magnetic anisotropy, by including eighth-power direction-cosine…

Electrical and Optical Properties of GexSe1-xAmorphous Thin Films

Tran Tri Nang、Masahiro Okuda、Tatsuhiko Matsushita 等 5 位作者1976-05-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

Measurements of electrical and optical properties have been made on Ge x Se 1- x amorphous thin films of about 1 µm thickness. From the experiment of electrical conductivity at various temperatures, two processes of the d.c. conductivity in Ge x Se 1- x films are observed in plots of ln σ against 1/ T . The thermoelec…

Binary Titania‐Silica Glasses Containing 10 to 20 Wt% TiO 2

Peter C. Schultz1976-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A series of glasses in the TiO 2 ‐SiO 2 system was prepared by the flame hydrolysis boule process. Clear glasses containing as much as 16.5 wt% TiO 2 were obtained. More TiO 2 caused opacity due to phase separation and anatase/rutile crystallization during glass boule formation. Glasses in the 12 to ∼17 wt% TiO 2 rang…

Crack Healing and Strengthening of Thermally Shocked Alumina

T. K. Gupta1976-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Crack healing and strengthening of thermally shocked alumina are related to pore evolution in the microstructure during annealing. Grain growth is not necessary for either an increase or a decrease in strength following heat treatment.

A. Stevels、A.D.M. Schrama-de Pauw1976-05-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The Eu 2+ luminescence in hexagonal aluminates containing large divalent or trivalent cations was studied in relation to the crystal structures of the host lattices. It was found that these can be divided into three groups: compounds with the magnetoplumbite structure like ; the La‐containing aluminates ( and ) which…

Thermal Cis-to-Trans Isomerization of Substituted Azobenzenes II. Substituent and Solvent Effects

Norio Nishimura、Toshinobu Sueyoshi、Hideyuki Yamanaka 等 6 位作者1976-05-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The thermal cis-to-trans isomerization rate of various azobenzenes was followed by means of spectrophotometric and flash photolysis techniques. For para-donor/para′-acceptor-substituted azobenzenes such as 4-nitro-4′-dimethylaminoazobenzene, the rate was distinctly accelerated, the activation energy decreasin…
