The antiferromagnetic resonance spectrum of single-crystal ${\mathrm{Cr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ has been mapped within the wavelength region from 12 mm to 2.8 mm and magnetic field intensities from 0 oersteds to 30 000 oersteds. The resonance frequencies were observed in this region in a temperature interval from abo…

Mass spectrometric study of the gaseous species effusing from a Knudsen cell filled with WO3 has shown that WO3(s) sublimes to form the gaseous molecules W3O9, W4O12, and W5O15. From the measured partial pressures for these species and their variations with temperature, ΔH, ΔF0, and ΔS0 of sublimation are obtained.
A technique similar to that used in crystal counter experiments is applied to the study of transit times of electrons and holes in thin evaporated films of amorphous Se carrying Au electrodes. Electron-hole pairs are generated near the top electrode by short electron pulses (or light flashes) of 10 -7 sec duration. Th…

Abstract The Flory-Rehner theory of swelling allows an estimate of the number of crosslinks in gum vulcanizates. In reinforced rubbers the apparent degree of crosslinking is raised by some fillers, particularly carbon blacks. It has been shown experimentally that, for vulcanizates of a given polymer at a fixed filler…

Abstract Modulus and swelling measurements were made on silicone rubber samples compounded with five different fillers. The data were at variance with the predictions of the theory of modulus reinforcement by Weiss, Rehner, Smallwood, and Guth. The results, when analyzed using a modification of the kinetic theory of e…
An x-ray analysis of tellurium oxide glass has been made. This glass is unusual in that it is made up of octahedra which exhibit a close order configuration such that four oxygens are found at a distance of 1.95 A and two others at 2.75 A. This configuration is similar to that found in the crystal. The way in which th…
Oxidation of UO2 to U3O8 in dry air and oxygen at temperatures of 160 to 350°C proceeds by a two-step reaction. In the first step the tetragonal oxide of composition UO2.34±0.03 is formed. In the second step this tetragonal phase is converted to orthorhombic U3O8. The rate controlling process in the first stage is the…

Abstract Infrared absorption spectra of oriented cellulose fibers have been observed using polarized radiation. Natural fibers are in general too thick but swelling them in NaOH solution followed by pressing, washing, and drying is an effective way of obtaining a suitable thickness in the 650–3100 cm. −1 region. The d…

The implications of the Jahn-Teller theorem are discussed with special reference to the case where the forces tending to lower the symmetry of electronically degenerate molecular states are of the same order as the restoring forces encountered during typical vibrations. It is shown that the resulting dynamical situati…
