Optically anisotropic polyethylene–gold nanocomposites

Y. Dirix、Cyril Darribère、Wilbert Heffels 等 6 位作者1999-11-01Applied Optics

Gold colloids coated with a self-assembled monolayer of an alkanethiol were introduced into a polyethylene matrix by means of solution-casting techniques. We oriented the resulting nanocomposites by uniaxial drawing in the solid state. The absorption spectra of the drawn nanocomposites in the visible wavelength region…

The influence of boric acid (H3BO3) additions to sulfuric acid (H2SO4) were examined for the anodizing of Al 2024-T3 (UNS A92024) and Al 7075-T6 (UNS A97075) alloys at constant voltage. Alloys were pretreated by electropolishing, by sodium dichromate (Na2Cr2O7)/H2SO4 (CSA) etching, or by alkaline etching. Current-time…

Evaluation of macromolecular electron-density map quality using the correlation of local r.m.s. density

Thomas C. Terwilliger、Joel Berendzen1999-11-01Acta Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography

It has recently been shown that the standard deviation of local r.m. s. electron density is a good indicator of the presence of distinct regions of solvent and protein in macromolecular electron-density maps [Terwilliger & Berendzen (1999). Acta Cryst. D55, 501-505]. Here, it is demonstrated that a complementary measu…

Enrico Cavalli、E. Zannoni、Claudio Mucchino 等 7 位作者1999-11-01Journal of the Optical Society of America B

The optical properties of KLa(MoO4)2 crystals doped with Nd3+ are investigated at temperatures in the range 10–300 K. The spontaneous transition probabilities, the branching ratios, and the radiative lifetime are calculated in the framework of the Judd–Ofelt theory and compared with the experimental results for the 4F…

Oxygen Content in ß‐Si3N4 Crystal Lattice

Mikito Kitayama、Kiyoshi Hirao、A. Tsuge 等 5 位作者1999-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

ß‐Si 3 N 4 crystals were obtained through the heat treatment of alpha‐Si 3 N 4 powder with additives, Y 2 O 3 :SiO 2 = 1:2 and 2:1, and subsequent acid treatments that removed the secondary phases. The lattice oxygen contents of these crystals were determined by the hot‐gas extraction method to be 0.258 ± 0.006 and 0.…

Mechanisms of Action of Mixed Solid−Liquid Antifoams. 2. Stability of Oil Bridges in Foam Films

Nikolai D. Denkov1999-11-01Langmuir

In the first part of this study we described the process of destabilization of foam films by mixed (silica−silicone oil) antifoam drops as observed with a high-speed video camera. The drops formed oil bridges, which stretched with time and eventually ruptured the foam films. Remarkably, two types of bridges could be d…

Directional Solidification and Melting of Eutectic GaIn

J. N. Koster1999-11-01Crystal Research and Technology

Eutectic gallium-indium is studied in a horizontal Bridgman furnace geometry. Differential temperature gradients are applied to solidify and melt the alloy while observing in-situ the interface morphology and the chemical segregation in the melt and in the solid as well. Upon cooling, a wedge-type indium-rich mushy zo…

Seed layer dependence of room-temperature recrystallization in electroplated copper films

Kazuyoshi Ueno、Tom Ritzdorf、S.Grace S.Grace1999-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

Room-temperature recrystallization (self-annealing) of electroplated copper (Cu) films is investigated using three kinds of seed/barrier layers with nontexture and (111) texture. The as-plated films have almost the same texture as the seeds. The texture changes during self-annealing depend on the seed texture. The (11…

Plastic deformation of GaAs at low temperatures

T. Suzki、Takashi Yasutomi、T. Tokuoka 等 4 位作者1999-11-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Intrinsic GaAs single crystals were deformed under hydrostatic pressure at temperatures down to 130K. Slip lines indicate that, below 300 K, deformation occurs by ½ ⟨101⟩{111} slip with frequent cross-slip. Above 300 K the crystal is so brittle that no slip lines are observed and the critical resolved shear stress τ c…

Ab initio study of 180° domain wall energy and structure in PbTiO3

S. Pöykkö、D. J. Chadi1999-11-01Applied Physics Letters

We have calculated the electronic and atomic structures for 180° domain walls in PbTiO3 using a first-principles total energy method. Domain walls are found to be Pb centered and extremely narrow with a width of only about two lattice constants. The energy density of a domain wall is calculated to be 0.1–0.2 J/m2.
