Investigation of the Corrosive Behavior of Waters

Werner Stumm1960-11-01Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division

An interpretation is given to specific corrosion results obtained in field and laboratory investigations. The complex mutual interaction of corrosion stimulating and inhibiting factors (pH, buffer capacity, CaCO3 deposition, and alkalinity) is treated.

A magnetic study of precipitation in a gold-cobalt alloy

P. Gaunt1960-11-01Philosophical magazine

The precipitation kinetics of a gold l·5%, by weight, cobalt alloy have been followed by measuring the sàturation magnetization of the precipitated cobalt and the results are compared with current theories. Marked differences were found between the ageing curves of air and water-quenched specimens. The remanent magnet…

Chain Folding and Free Energy Density in Polymer Crystals

Anton Peterlin1960-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

Macromolecular chains in freely growing crystals very likely fold back at regular intervals in order to minimize the free energy density of the crystal. The surface energy contribution favors infinite thickness. The smearing out effect of interchain potential field, however, arising from the incoherent part of fluctua…

On the Magnetic Properties of Cr2As and Cu2Sb

Motoyoshi Yuzuri1960-11-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

The thermomagnetic properties of the compound Cr 2 As and Cu 2 Sb were investigated together with the phase diagram of Cr–As system. From the results of thermal and thermomagnetic measurements for Cr 2 As and Cu 2 Sb it was found that they show antiferromagnetic behavior with the Néel point at 393°K and at 373°K respe…

X-Ray Study on the Binding Properties of Cu2O and Ag2O Crystals

Tadasu Suzuki1960-11-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Crystallographical properties of the chemically prepared powder samples of Ag 2 O and Cu 2 O were investigated by an X-ray diffractometer, in relation to their bonding characters. The lattice constant is 4.720±0.004A for Ag 2 O and 4.268±0.001A for Cu 2 O. The thermal expansion coefficient of the lattice is 1.9×10 -6…

Reliability of Glauconite for Age Measurement by K-Ar and Rb-Sr Methods

R. F. Cormier P. M. Hurley、R. F. Cormier、J. Hower 等 5 位作者1960-11-01AAPG Bulletin

ABSTRACT Age measurements on glauconite by the K-Ar and Rb-Sr methods show a consistent variation with geological age with moderately small scatter. The results appear to fall 10-20 per cent short of ages measured on micas associated with dated igneous rocks. K-Ar and Rb-Sr age values are closely concordant in the maj…

Theory of Gas Bubble Dynamics in Oscillating Pressure Fields

M. S. Plesset、Din-Yu Hsieh1960-11-01The Physics of Fluids

The behavior of a permanent gas bubble in a liquid with an oscillating pressure field is analyzed with a linearized theory. If the assumption is made that conditions within the bubble are uniform, the thermodynamic relations found are as expected; i.e., at low frequencies the bubble behaves isothermally and at high fr…

X‐Ray determination of the crystallite orientation distributions of polyethylene terephthalate films

C. J. Heffelfinger、R. L. Burton1960-11-01Journal of Polymer Science

Abstract A set of definitions is proposed to describe uniquely the six types of orientation possible in semicrystalline polymeric films. Oriented polymer films were studied by a new x‐ray diffraction technique which permits rotation of a sample about a number of independent axes yielding orientation distributions of t…

Time and Temperature Dependence of the Ultimate Properties of an SBR Rubber at Constant Elongations

Thor L. Smith、Paul J. Stedry1960-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

The ultimate properties of amorphous rubbers at temperatures above Tg are considered in terms of stress-strain curves to rupture measured at different strain rates and temperatures. The consideration indicates that a specimen held at a fixed elongation should break eventually, provided the elongation exceeds a critica…

An Investigation of the Cubic-Hexagonal Transition in Barium Titanate

R.M. Glaister、H. F. Kay1960-11-01Proceedings of the Physical Society

Normal perovskite-type barium titanate may be converted to the hexagonal polymorph by firing in a hydrogen atmosphere at 1330°C, 130° lower than that previously reported for firing in air. With suitable additives such as MnCO 3 the conversion begins at temperatures as low as 1100°C. Conversion is inhibited by a number…

Morphology of Polymer Single Crystals

Darrell H. Reneker、P. H. Geil1960-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

Evidence is presented indicating that polyethylene crystals grow in the form of hollow pyramids as well as lamellar crystals. Modes of packing the folded molecules consistent with the nonplanar structure are proposed. Observed electron diffraction patterns and dark-field micrographs are related to the pyramidal morpho…

Neutron and Optical Studies of Domains in NiO

Walter Roth1960-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

Antiferromagnetic domains in NiO have been studied by neutron diffraction and optical observation of single crystals. There are two kinds of antiferromagnetic domain walls, T (twin) and S (spin-rotation). A T wall is produced by rotation of the antiferromagnetic pattern of magnetic moments and an S wall by rotation of…

Dielectric Relaxation of Polar Liquids

S. H. Glarum1960-11-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The statistical theory of the dielectric relaxation of polar liquids is developed using the fluctuation-dissipation approach to linear dissipative phenomena, and an expression is derived relating the complex dielectric constant to a time-dependent microscopic correlation function. It is found that a finite number of m…

Studies in Molecular Dynamics. II. Behavior of a Small Number of Elastic Spheres

B. J. Alder、T. E. Wainwright1960-11-01OpenAlex

The equation of state and the collision rate for systems ranging in size from four to 500 particles are described. The dependence of the results on the number of particles is qualitatively discussed and in this way insight is gained as to what is required of more accurate analytical theories. By comparing the results…

The integral formulae for the variational solution of the molecular many-electron wave equation in terms of Gaussian functions with direct electronic correlation

Samuel Francis Boys1960-10-25OpenAlex

Abstract Some years ago the author proved that explicit formulae could be obtained for all the many-dimensional integrals occurring in variational solutions of Schrödinger’s many-electron equation for molecules if the expansion functions are constructed from factors of polynomials and radial Gaussian functions about a…
