The applied electric field at the onset of polarization reversal during switching of a triglycine sulphate single crystal with a sinusoidal applied field has been measured as a function of crystal thickness. In contrast to the sinusoidal coercive field measurements of Pulvari and Kuebler (1958), this field is frequenc…
Abstract The author has shown the effect of various inorganic ions on the polymorphic crystallization of calcium carbonate from a bicarbonate solution. No definite conclusion regarding the mechanism to give calcite, aragonite or vaterite can yet be made, but these data help to give a pattern of the influence of inorga…

Abstract A discussion is commenced in which the electronic properties of tetrahedral intermetallic compounds are described in terms of localized molecular-orbital bonds. The correct definitions of covalency and polarity of these bonds are linked with the netionicity of the atoms of the crystal. Detailed non-empirical…
An analytical investigation is made of the geometry of an edge dislocation in a simple atomic model of an infinite crystal, and the effect on the dislocation of externally applied shear stress. This study indicates that in dislocation theory significant results may be obtained from the discrete model, on which accurat…
The absorption and fluorescence spectra of SmCl3 have been studied at 4°K and the Zeeman effects of many lines obtained in a magnetic field of 35 100 G. The lower group of levels obtained chiefly from the fluorescence spectrum can be unambiguously identified as the multiplet components of the 6H and 6F levels. The sit…
A new type of luminescence in nominally pure alkali halide crystals was studied. At room temperature the excitation was most efficient in the wavelength region that has been associated with band-to-band transitions. It is suggested that the emission results from the capture of a hole by an $F$ center. In agreement wit…
Fluorescence-polarization data on porphyrins are reported. The results can be readily interpreted in terms of the theory of polarization spectroscopy and the theory of the electronic and vibrational structure of these molecules. It is shown how these two theories combine to interpret most of the data, but some anomali…
The absorption spectra of thin films of argon, krypton, and xenon have been measured between 20 and 50\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K in the region from 1600 to 900 \AA{} (8 to 14 eV). The spectra show: (a) strong doublets corresponding to the atomic resonance doublets, (b) lines apparently of nonatomic nature, a…
Abstract Crystalline ‘spherulites’ grown in ultra-thin films of natural rubber at — 26 °C were examined in the electron microscope. The spherulites form hollow domes, like blisters in the film, which collapse under electron irradiation producing remarkable fibre-like patterns of folds and creases. Within the spherulit…

In the course of a high-temperature x-ray diffraction study of tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/, a number of previously unreported reflections, which are inconsistent with a body-centered lattice, hare been observed. The intensities of most of these reflections are rather low, but the strongest of these (the (102) reflection) wa…
The fundamental and idealized kinetics of luminescence phenomena in crystalline materials are reviewed. Luminescent decay modes are distinguished on the basis of their time histories into three general categories: the exponential, bimolecular, and electron trap laws. Expressions for the decay of emission intensity are…

A system for levitating liquid metal using a high frequency levitating coil surmounted by a stabilizing ring is described. By adjustment of the ring relative to the coil the liquid metal can be stabilized and steered to any desired position in the system.
