Phase-Matched Third-Harmonic Generation in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Jason W. Shelton、Y. R. Shen1970-07-06Physical Review Letters

Using de Vries's model, we predicted theoretically that phase matching of optical third-harmonic generation can be achieved in cholesteric liquid crystals. The prediction was verified by measurements of third-harmonic generation from a mixture of cholesteryl chloride and cholesteryl myristate.

The nature and composition of amorphous material and free oxides in some temperate region and tropical soils

K. H. Tan、H. F. Perkins、R. A. McCreery1970-07-01Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis

Amorphous clay separated from pedons of a highly weathered soil previously classified as Oxisol and an Ultisol of the Southern States and, from the surface horizons of an Oxisol and two Andepts of the tropics were studied by chemical, DTA, infrared and X‐ray analysis. Considerable amounts of amorphous material, 20–37%…

Migration of Fibers in Yarns. Part VIII : Experimental Study on a 3-Layer Structure of 19 Filaments

J. W. S. Hearle、B.C. Goswami1970-07-01Textile Research Journal

A study was made of the migration behavior of filaments in a 3-layer structure of 19 filaments. The filaments were twisted in two distinct forms: (a) ribbon-twisted and (b) cylindrical-twisted. The form of twisting was found to have an appreciable effect on the migration behavior of filaments. The frequency of migrati…

Surface Energy Effects for Small Holes or Particles in Elastomers

A. N. Gent、D. A. Tompkins1970-07-01Rubber Chemistry and Technology

Abstract Expansion of a small spherical hole in a highly elastic solid is treated theoretically. Both elastic and surface energy terms are considered; the corresponding surface forces are assumed to be additive. The surface energy of the elastomer is assumed to be similar to that of simple liquids. Pressures or triaxi…

Influence of the Cation on the Mode of Stress-Corrosion Failure of Iron In Nitrate Solutionsc

D. J. Lees、N. A. Lockington1970-07-01British Corrosion Journal

The nature of attack on unstressed iron and the mode of cracking in stressed iron during immersion in boiling Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3, NH4NO3 solutions and various mixed Ca2+ and NH4+ solutions have been followed by microscopic examination of specimens removed from the solutions at various fractions of the mean failure time a…

X-Ray Spectrometric Characteristics of Potassium Acid Phthalate Crystals

D. Chopra1970-07-01Review of Scientific Instruments

The x-ray diffraction characteristics of potassium acid phthalate (KAP) crystals have been measured with a vacuum two-crystal x-ray spectrometer using a flowing-gas proportional counter as a detector. The values of resolving power, percent reflection, and coefficient of reflection as determined from the (1, −1) positi…

Thermal Expansion of Composites as Affected by the Matrix

Rao Tummala、A. L. Friedberg1970-07-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Summary and Conclusions Thermal expansion measurements of composite systems containing hard dispersions embedded in brittle and semibrittle matrices indicate the importance of (1) the magnitude of the stress developed in the matrix and (2) the crack propagation behavior of the matrix. The thermal expansion of these co…

Interaction of Atomic Oxygen with Various Surfaces

James A. Riley、Clayton F. Giese1970-07-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

A pulsed atomic-oxygen beam is used to investigate the interaction of atomic oxygen with various surfaces at a pressure of 10−7 torr. The probability that an atom after striking a surface will return to the gas phase as an atom is measured for Pyrex, stainless steel, Teflon, gold, and titanium and is found to lie betw…

Some Relations Among Coastal Plain Soils and Geomorphic Surfaces in North Carolina

R. B. Daniels、E. E. Gamble、John G. Cady1970-07-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Soils on the upper and middle Coastal Plain surfaces in North Carolina have been exposed to surface weathering for about 3‐ to 10‐million years. This makes it possible to evaluate the effect of soil formation of long duration on soil properties. Solum thickness, percentage of soils with plinthite, and gibbsit…

Adsorption of Water by Montmorillonite—Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Adsorption Products

Rhys Parfitt、D. J. Greenland1970-07-01Clay Minerals

Abstract Water adsorption by interlamellar complexes of poly(ethylene glycols) and montmorillonite has been determined using a silica spiral spring, and supplementary data obtained by X-ray and infrared techniques. The adsorbed water enters the interlamellar region, where it is associated with the exchangeable cation.…

Hypervelocity impact in thin sheets and semi- infinite targets at 15km/sec

DAVID R. SAWLE1970-07-01AIAA Journal

Pyrex spheres (0.15-mm diam) accelerated to a velocity of 15 km/sec by a plasma rail gun were used to produce holes in thin stainless steel and aluminum targets. The velocity was measured by time of flight, using a photomultiplier to detect the time at which a thin target was penetrated. The sphere diameter was measur…

93Nb Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Investigation of LiNbO3

Ellory Schempp、G. E. Peterson、J. R. Carruthers1970-07-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The temperature dependence of the 93Nb nuclear quadrupole coupling constant in stoichiometric LiNbO3 powder specimens was measured from 21 to 515°K. No phase transitions were observed in this range. Analysis of the data on a simple vibrational model gave an Einstein temperature of 514°K in excellent agreement with tha…

STUDIES ON THE POSTERIOR SILK GLAND OF THE SILKWORM BOMBIX MORI

Yutaka Tashiro、Eiichi Otsuki1970-07-01The Journal of Cell Biology

Ultracentrifugal analyses of the native silk proteins extracted from the various parts of the middle silk gland of the mature silkworm have revealed that there exist four components with S degrees (20,w) values of 10S, 9-10S, 9S, and 4S in the extract. It is suggested that the fastest 10S component is the native fibro…

Some studies on the swelling behavior of polyethylene

Morris G. Rogers1970-07-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract When polymers are extruded from a capillary, the amount of extrudate swelling is generally found to be a function of shear rate and capillary dimensions. Experiments with polyethylene now show that when shear rate is replaced by an average transit time in the capillary, postextrusion swell becomes a function…

Catalysis of a symmetry restricted reaction by transition metal complexes. The importance of the ligand

J. Manassen1970-07-01Journal of Catalysis

The valence isomerization of quadricyclene to norbornadiene is catalyzed by certain transition metal complexes of phthalocyanine and tetraphenyl porphyrin. To explore the dependence of catalytic activity on the number of d-electrons in the metal ion, complexes having a number of d-electrons from 5 to 10 were studied.…
