Measurement of Some Viscoelastic Properties of Rat Skin Following Repeated Load

Hannes Vogel1976-01-01Connective Tissue Research

The influence of age and of corticosteroid treatment on viscoelastic properties of skin samples has been studied in rats. Hysteresis curves were evaluated with increased extension for each cycle. Maximum stress and modulus of elasticity were increased by age and by 10 days' prednisolone treatment. However, hysteresis…

Goldschmidt factor and phase diagrams of doped titanate zirconates

M. Troccaz、P. Gonnard、Y. Fetiveau 等 5 位作者1976-01-01Ferroelectrics

Goldschmidt factors taking into account substitution ions are calculated for a series of doped PZT. X-ray measurements in the paraelectric phase are reported. The occurrence of a ferroelectric or of an antiferroelectric phase is related to the tolerance factor and to a hydrostatic stress on the ions in the B position.

Surface cracking in proton-irradiated glass

Tomas L. Jensen、Brian R. Lawn、R.L. Dalglish 等 4 位作者1976-01-01Radiation Effects

It is well known that radiation (both particle and photon) can cause substantial density changes in certain solids. In cases where the radiation damage is non-uniformly distributed, these changes are manifested as gradients of residual stress. With ion bombardment, where penetrations under accelerating voltages of sev…

Crystal structure of a clathrate inclusion compound of hydroquinone and hydrogen sulphide

Thomas C. W. Mak、John S. Tse、Chi-Sang Tse 等 5 位作者1976-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Perkin Transactions 2

The crystal structure of a β-hydroquinone clathrate of stoicheiometry 3C6H4(OH)2·xH2S (x= 0.768) has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray data. The hydrogen-bonded [OH]6hexagonal rings are nearly but not exactly planar, and a difference map revealed an ordered proton arrangement. The clathration cavity is roug…

Mechanism for the formation and growth of ionic precipitates from aqueous solution

Donald Gunn1976-01-01Faraday Discussions of the Chemical Society

The rate of growth of slightly soluble ionic precipitates from aqueous solution is affected by the presence of a co-ordinated layer of water molecules clustered around a central ion. When the ions are small and highly charged, water molecules in the cluster are firmly held; in such solutions it is known that ion assoc…

Thermal degradation of polystyrene: Effect of end groups derived from azobisisobutyronitrile

Constantin N. Caşcaval、Sidney Straus、D. W. Brown 等 4 位作者1976-01-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Symposia

Abstract Polystyrenes containing end groups derived from azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) were subjected to thermal degradation at 280–350°C and the rates of volatilization compared with those of thermally and anionically prepared polystyrene. At 330–350°C the degradation of the AIBN polymer resembled that of the thermal…

Abstract In the thermal oxidation of low density polyethylene (PE) in the melt phase and isotactic polypropylene (PP) in the solid phase, the changes in molecular weight distribution (MWD), weight average molecular weights ( M ω), and average number of chain scissions have been studied by gel permeation chromatography…

Mesomorphic Properties of Some α-Methyl Cinnamic Acids and their Esters

B. K. Sadashiva1976-01-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

Two homologous series of liquid crystalline substances have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties studied. These are (i) trans-p-n-alkoxy-α-methyl cinnamic acids and (ii) trans-p-n-alkoxy-α-methyl-p'-cyanophenyl cinnamates. The esters are colourless and fairly low melting materials of high positive dielect…

Critical phenomena in ferroelectric crystals of lead zirconate titanate

Roy Clarke、A. M. Glazer1976-01-01Ferroelectrics

The ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in PbZrxTi1-xO3 (0.88 < x < 1) has been investigated using x-ray, dielectric and optical techniques. It is shown that a changeover from first-order to second-order behaviour occurs at around x = 0.94. The exponent, β, of the order parameter in the region of this critical…

An Experimental Study of the Anomalous Transmission (Borrmann Effect) in Absorbing Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

K. A. Suresh1976-01-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

It has been shown previously that in analogy with the Borrmann effect in X-ray diffraction from crystals there is an anomalous increase in the transmitted intensity near the Bragg reflection band in an absorbing cholesteric liquid crystal. In this communication detailed experimental studies of this effect carried out…

Vernon L. Bell1976-01-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Chemistry Edition

Abstract A series of fluorene and fluorenone diamines were polymerized with two aromatic dianhydrides, and the resulting polyamic acids were cyclodehydrated to aromatic polyimides. A study of the mechanical properties of the polyimide films disclosed they are among the stiffest reported to date, with an excellent rete…

Tadaaki Mizoguchi、Yoshiaki Takei、Taijiro Okabe1976-01-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The disproportionation of thiosulfate, trithionate, tetrathionate and sulfite in acidic solutions has been studied at relatively high temperatures. Thiosulfate hardly decomposes in the absence of sulfuric acid, even at 150 °C, but decomposes very easily in the presence of sulfuric acid at 70 °C, forming eleme…

Liquid Crystalline Compounds: III On Applicability of Schröder-Van Laar Equations to Liquid Crystals Mixtures

A. V. Ivashenko、В. В. Титов、E. I. Kovshev1976-01-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The phase diagrams for the mixtures of p-cyanophenyl-p-alkylbenzoates and p-alkoxycarbonyl-oxyphenyl p-butyloxybenzoates were investigated. The Schröder-Van Laar equation was found inapplicable for calculations of composition, eutectic-mixture melting points and crystalline-nematic transition heats of these compounds.
