The ESR spectra of NSO2−4 in (NH4)2SO4

Christian E. Bailey1981-03-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The slow decay of NH+3 and NH+2 centers in ammonium sulfate produce a new, very stable, paramagnetic center that has been identified as NSO2−4. This center has g values of gx=2.012, gy=2.011, and gz=2.007 with the corresponding hfi constants Ax= Ay=0.0 and Az=25.2 G. No change in this center is observed on passage of…

Optical Properties of 3d Transition Metals: V, Cr, Fe and Ni

Yasunori Kubo、Shinya Wakoh1981-03-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Complex dielectric function ε (0, ω) and energy-loss function -Im [ ε (0, ω) -1 ] of the 3d transition metals (V, Cr, Fe and Ni) are calculated within RPA with the use of the energy values and the wave functions determined by the APW method in the energy range 0–40 eV and are compared with experiment. The theoretical…

Effects of oxygen and chlorine on the interfacial crystallization of amorphous selenium films

Frank Jansen1981-03-01Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology

The interfacial crystallization of vapor deposited selenium films has been investigated. It is shown that the interfacial crystalline layer does not form immediately upon condensation of the vapor on aluminum substrates held at 80 °C but forms by crystallization of the condensed amorphous phase. This transformation gi…

Magnetic phase transitions in the Pd2−xCuxMnIn system

P. J. Webster1981-03-01Journal of Applied Physics

The Heusler alloys have the L21 structure and occur at the compoistion X2MnZ. The majority, such as Cu2MnIn, are ferromagnetic with a moment of about 4 μB at the Mn sites but some, such as Pd2MnIn, are antiferromagnetic. The Pd2MnIn1−xSnx and Pd2MnIn1−ySby [1,2] series have magnetic structures that change from antifer…

A model on the coercivity of the hardened 2–17 rare earth-cobalt permanent magnets

Sun Tian-duo1981-03-01Journal of Applied Physics

A microstructure geometry with cells as rhombic hexahedrons which are separated from each other by a thin layer wall is given. Non-coherent wriggle domain wall displacement mechanism is proposed. An expression for the coercive force Hc = (√3)Δγ/(2Msd) has been derived. The calculated values are fairly in agreement wit…

Protective Clothing Fabrics

L. Beníšek、G.K. Edmondson1981-03-01Textile Research Journal

Laboratory small-scale tests for the evaluation of the performance of fabrics against molten steel, cast iron, copper, aluminum, zinc, lead, and tin were developed. The results of the small-scale molten iron and copper tests were verified by a large-scale test. Zirpro wool fabrics offered the best protection against t…

Dehydroxylation of Porous Glass by Means of Chlorine

Thomas H. Elmer1981-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Water in reconstructed 96 % SiO 2 glass is effectively removed by exposing porous glass to chlorine at high temperatures prior to final firing in vacuum. The annealing point of the final glass is markedly increased by such treatment, which results in elimination of the OH band due to replacement of OH − by Cl − ions.

Wet poly(vinyl chloride) membrane

Sachio Hirose、Eiki Yasukawa、Takuhei Nose1981-03-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Wet, porous, and semipermeable poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane prepared from a binary system, PVC and dimethylformamide, by immersing in alcohols or ethers was studied. The pore dimensions of the wet PVC membrane were from 0.01 to 0.05 μm, calculated from hydrodynamic permeability by using experimental va…

Photochemical rupture of microcapsules: A model system

Edith Mathiowitz、Aliza Raziel、M. D. Cohen 等 4 位作者1981-03-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Polyamide microcapsules containing solutions of azo‐bis‐isobutyronitrile (AIBN) were prepared and characterized as regards diameter and wall thickness. Under UV irradiation the AIBN eliminates nitrogen, and this, under suitable conditions, leads to rupture of the capsules. The influence of capsular diameter a…

A theory of aggregation in the thermal denaturation region of multistrand biopolymers

John H. Shibata、J. Michael Schurr1981-03-01Biopolymers

Abstract A theory explicitly allowing the possibility of aggregation of multistrand biopolymers is proposed. It is found that the same secondary bonds responsible for stabilizing the native structure at low temperature will promote aggregation in the thermal denaturation region for sufficiently long chains. A requirem…

Magnetostriction of some hexagonal ferrites

F. Licci、S. Rinaldi1981-03-01Journal of Applied Physics

With the aim of beginning a systematic characterization of the magnetoelastic properties of the hexagonal ferrites we measured the room temperature magnetostriction in a number of these materials. The analysis of the experimental results allows us to conclude that: a) the saturation magnetostriction in hexaferrites is…

Application of cylindrical distribution functions to wide-angle X-ray scattering from oriented polymers

Geoffrey R. Mitchell、R. Lovell1981-03-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

A systematic approach is presented for obtaining cylindrical distribution functions (CDF's) of noncrystalline polymers which have been oriented by extension. The scattering patterns and CDF's are also sharpened by the method proposed by Deas and by Ruland. Data from atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene ar…

Protective Clothing Fabrics

L. Beníšek、W. A. Phillips1981-03-01Textile Research Journal

An increase in the fabric- or assembly-heat sensor separation improved protection against convective heat (flames) exposure. Zirpro wool assemblies required a longer exposure time to reach second-degree burns, with a longer pain-alarm time than comparable assemblies of aramid or flame-retardant cotton. An increase in…

Macroscopic surface roughness and the resistivity of thin metal films

K C Elsom、J. R. Sambles1981-03-01Journal of Physics F Metal Physics

The effect of macroscopic surface roughness upon the resistivity of thin metal films has been calculated by computer modelling of the form of these films. It is shown that, as a consequence of the tendency for the films to be islandised, the resistivity as a function of decreasing mean film thickness rises well above…

Characteristics of residual and colluvial soils developed on granite and of the associated pre-Wisconsin landforms in north-central New Brunswick

C. Wang、G. J. Ross、H. W. Rees1981-03-01Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences

An area in north-central New Brunswick of approximately 20 km 2 , where tors are common, was found to be undisrupted by glaciation. The soils in this area are developed on grus and appear to be of pre-Wisconsin age. In both residual Podzolic and colluvial Brunisolic soils, gibbsite was found to be present in significa…
