Modelling peptide nanotubes for artificial ion channels

Fainida Rahmat、Ngamta Thamwattana、Barry J. Cox2011-10-07Nanotechnology

We investigate the van der Waals interaction of D,L-Ala cyclopeptide nanotubes and various ions, ion-water clusters and C(60) fullerenes, using the Lennard-Jones potential and a continuum approach which assumes that the atoms are smeared over the peptide nanotube providing an average atomic density. Our results predic…

Sayaka Hatano、Kana Fujita、Nobuyuki Tamaoki 等 8 位作者2011-10-07The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters

The photochromic naphthalene-bridged imidazole dimer containing a naphthyl moiety that tethers two triarylimidazole units shows instantaneous coloration upon exposure to UV light and rapid fading in the dark. In this work, we demonstrate the formation of a stable chiral radical-pair that exhibits no photoracemization…

Influence of Supersaturation and Spontaneous Catalyst Formation on the Growth of PbS Wires: Toward a Unified Understanding of Growth Modes

Patricia L. Nichols、Minghua Sun、Cun‐Zheng Ning2011-10-07ACS Nano

High quality stoichiometric lead sulfide (PbS) wires were synthesized by a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process using pure PbS powder as the material source. Growth mechanisms were systematically investigated under various growth conditions, with three modes of growth identified: direct vapor-liquid-solid (V…

Two transitions between isotropic and nematic phases in confined liquid crystals

A. V. Emelyanenko、Satoshi Aya、Yuji Sasaki 等 7 位作者2011-10-07Physical Review E

The molecular mean-field theory for the nematic-isotropic (N-Iso) phase transition in the vicinity of the surface is derived. We have shown that the nematic order parameter in liquid crystal near the surface is generally different from that in the bulk. It is never equal to zero if the anisotropic interaction with the…

V. A. Popova、N. V. Surovtsev2011-10-07The Journal of Chemical Physics

Here, we studied Rayleigh-Brillouin light scattering in ten different glass-forming liquids (α-picoline, toluene, o-toluidine, ethanol, salol, glycerol, dibutyl phthalate, o-terphenyl, propylene carbonate, and propylene glycol). For each of these liquids it was found that the Landau-Placzek ratio is in a good agreemen…

Sol–Gel Transition in Dispersions of Layered Double-Hydroxide Nanosheets

Vikrant V. Naik、S. Vasudevan2011-10-07Langmuir

Surfactant-intercalated layered double-hydroxide solid Mg-Al LDH-dodecyl sulfate (DDS) undergoes rapid and facile delamination to its ultimate constituent, single sheets of nanometer thickness and micrometer size, in a nonpolar solvent such as toluene to form stable dispersions. The delaminated nanosheets are electric…

Magnetite (Fe 3−δ O 4 ) nanoparticles with the size less than 30 nm have been synthesized by using a simple reverse co-precipitation method at room temperature. During the process, ferrous sulfate (FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O) powder was used as an iron precursor, and ammonium hydroxide (NH 4 OH) as a precipitating agent. The expe…

Magnetic adatoms on graphene in the Kondo regime: An Anderson model treatment

Zhen‐Gang Zhu、Jamal Berakdar2011-10-07Physical Review B

We study theoretically the Kondo effect for a magnetic adatom on graphene using the Anderson model. After obtaining the Green's function of the impurity up to higher-order contributions in the hybridization, we calculate analytically the self-energy in the presence of strong correlations. It is found that the Kondo re…

Characteristics of Nanogaps Formed by Planar Au and Pt Nanoparticles Revealed by Raman Spectroscopy

Kwan Kim、Hyang Bong Lee、Jeong‐Yong Choi 等 4 位作者2011-10-07The Journal of Physical Chemistry C

Raman peaks are barely detectable for molecules present on macroscopically smooth metal substrates. Raman peaks can be observed, however, by allowing Ag or Au nanoparticles to overlie the adsorbate molecules. For instance, no Raman peaks are detected for 4-aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) on a flat Au substrate. Upon attachi…
