This study was conducted to determine which of eight different extractants best described the K-supplying capacities of nine southern Ontario soils. The total amount of K extracted by eight crops of alfalfa grown in the greenhouse was related to soil K by regression techniques. The following procedures extracted incre…

The luminescence of Gd3+ in YOCl is reported. From temperature dependent emission spectra and decay measurements, the Judd–Ofelt parameters Ω2 and Ω6 of Gd3+ in YOCl are obtained: Ω2=2.97×10−23 m2 and Ω6=8.65×10−24 m2. The relative consistency of Ω2 and Ω6 is confirmed by measuring the 8S7/2→6D9/2 and 6I7/2 transition…

Dielectric, optical and elastic properties of dimethylaminaluminiumsulphate crystals were studied. The crystal is shown to undergo a nearly tricritical second order phase transition with the symmetry change 2/m–m at Tc = 150 K. The transition can be classified as a proper ferroelectric one of the order-disorder type.…

Spherical‐impact damage to two silicon nitrides is investigated. Gas‐pressure‐sintered silicon nitride exhibits an elastic response to impact by spherical partially stabilized zirconia particles, resulting in Hertzian cone‐crack initiation in the sintered body. Pressureless‐sintered silicon nitride, on the other hand,…

A simple model for tapering optical glass fibers is described and analysed to show that unless the initial conditions have certain spatial singularities, the cross-sectional area cannot be made to vanish in finite time. The model is applied to an industrial process in which the fiber has piecewise uniform temperature.
