We report measurements of the intensity of the scattered light and the turbidity of aqueous solutions of the bovine lens protein, ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{II}}$-crystallin, near the critical point for binary liquiid phase separation, in a region of the phase diagram which is metastable with respect to protein-c…

Optical reflectivity measurements using a laser plasma light source

Michael Bortz、Roger H. French1989-11-06Applied Physics Letters

Light produced by a laser plasma light source (LPLS) is used to perform optical reflectivity measurements on single crystals from 5 to 40 eV in a single experiment. The intense continuum generated by the rare-earth plasma allows a significantly higher resolution above 15 eV and extends the measurements to higher energ…

Isotropic-nematic phase transition and angular correlations in isotropic suspensions of tobacco mosaic virus

Seth Fraden、G. Maret、D. L. D. Caspar 等 4 位作者1989-11-06Physical Review Letters

The specific magnetic-field-induced birefringence is measured in isotropic suspensions of the rodlike particle tobacco mosaic virus as a function of concentration and added salt. This quantity is proportional to the angular correlations between particles at zero field. In addition, the isotropic-nematic coexistence co…

Protein Crystal Growth in Microgravity

Lawrence J. DeLucas、Craig D. Smith、Herman W. Smith 等 24 位作者1989-11-03Science

The crystals of most proteins or other biological macromolecules are poorly ordered and diffract to lower resolutions than those observed for most crystals of simple organic and inorganic compounds. Crystallization in the microgravity environment of space may improve crystal quality by eliminating convection effects n…

Thermal conductivity of polymers under elevated pressures

V. P. Privalko、N. A. Rekhteta1989-11-01High Pressure Research

Polymeric thermoinsulators in practical applications are often subjected to elevated pressures which tend to change their thermophysical properties. A feeling of a probable change in polymer thermal conductivity A, with pressure P, may be obtained in the framework of Debye equation for solid dielectrics where Cv is th…

Über den Einfluß von Ultraschall auf chemische Reaktionen

Detlef Rehorek、Steffen Schöffauer、Horst Hennig1989-11-01Zeitschrift für Chemie

Abstract At sufficiently high intensities ultrasonic irradiation of liquids causes cavitation which leads to extremely high local temperatures and pressures. Therefore, chemical reactions may be accelerated by ultrasound. This effect is called sonochemistry. Using representative examples from both homogeneous and hete…

Electron field emission calculations on atomic-size microtips are presented. Models inorporating the atomic size and the particular geometrical shape of the tip are proposed. Theoretical analysis explain the remarkable properties observed experimentally : strong electron beam focusing and anomalous I-V characteristics…

Superspace symmetry modes and incommensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition inNbTe4

Z. Y. Chen、M. B. Walker1989-11-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The symmetry modes transforming according to the irreducible representations of the little superspace group of the wave vector characterizing the incommensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition in ${\mathrm{NbTe}}_{4}$ are derived. Some of these modes are considered as possible order parameters, and possible Landau…

High accuracy electron trajectory plotting through finite-element fields

Anjam Khursheed、A.R. Dinnis1989-11-01Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B Microelectronics Processing and Phenomena

Computer programs have been written which plot high accuracy trajectory paths for electrons through irregular finite-element meshes. The technique used to achieve this revolves around mapping irregular regions onto a normalized plane, where the usual operations of locating the electron’s position and interpolating for…

The NLH. has two high velocity burner rigs for oxidation and hot corrosion testing. A large, custom-built rig was commissioned in 1977 to enable actual components to be tested. A smaller rig for specimen testing was purchased in 1986. Experience with these rigs over the last decade is reviewed.

Transitional Phase of Ca 2 SiO 4 Solid Solution with Incommensurate Superstructure

Koichiro Fukuda、Iwao Maki1989-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Crystals of Ca 2 SiO 4 doped with K, P, Al, and Fe were grown and examined by means of both X‐ray and electronbeam diffraction. They are made up of domains 120° different in orientation around the c axis of the previous α phase. Each of the domains gives an orthorhombic superstructure whose cell is incommensurate with…

The dielectric constant of undoped, polycrystalline barium titanate in the paraelectric phase was obtained from the complex impedance plane representation in the 180–400°C temperature range, between 5 Hz and 13 MHz. A Curie-Weiss behavior is observed, with a Curie constant C o = 10.48 × 104 (K). These results are disc…
