[2]Catenane or not [2]catenane?

Harry Adams、Fiona J. Carver、Christopher A. Hunter1995-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Chemical Communications

The X-ray crystal structure of a [2]catenane is reported; the two cycles which comprise the link are related by crystallographic symmetry, so only when a packing diagram is generated is the interlocked structure revealed.

Structure of Fe, Mn-promoted sulfated zirconia catalyst by X-ray and IR absorption spectroscopies

José E. Tábora、Robert J. Davis1995-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Faraday Transactions

The rate of butane isomerization at low temperature is more than two orders of magnitude greater over sulfated zirconia with iron and manganese than over unpromoted sulfated zirconia. Therefore, the bulk and surface structures of the unpromoted and promoted catalysts have been investigated using X-ray absorption spect…

Diamond photoconducting detectors as high power z-pinch diagnostics (invited)

R. B. Spielman1995-01-01Review of Scientific Instruments

Diamond photoconducting detectors (PCDs) are one of the primary x-ray diagnostics for z-pinch experiments at Sandia National Laboratories’ Saturn facility. Diamond PCDs represent a significant advance in the state of the art for electrical x-ray detectors because of their stability of response, overall flatness of res…

Command surfaces, 10. Novel polymethacrylates with laterally attached azobenzene groups displaying photoinduced optical anisotropy

Haruhisa Akiyama、Kazuaki Kudo、Kunihiro Ichimura1995-01-01Macromolecular Rapid Communications

Abstract Polymethacrylates with laterally attached azobenzenes were prepared to cause molecular reorientation of this chromophore in their thin films by linearly polarized irradiation with an exposure energy of less than ca. 100 mJ/cm 2 . A homogeneous alignment was induced by assembling a nematic liquid crystal cell…

Magnetohydrodynamic Flows in Arbitrary Geometries in Strong, Nonuniform Magnetic Fields — A Numerical Code for the Design of Fusion Reactor Blankets

L. Bühler1995-01-01Fusion Technology

Magnetohydrodynamic flows play an important role in the design of liquid-metal fusion reactor blankets. The interaction of the plasma-confining strong magnetic field and the electrically conducting coolant and breeding material may cause high pressure drop and unusual flow structures compared with hydrodynamic flows.…

PD recognition with knowledge-based preprocessing and neural networks

C. Cachin、H. J. Wiesmann1995-01-01IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation

Partial discharge (PD) patterns are an important tool for the diagnosis of HV insulation systems. Human experts can discover possible insulation defects in various representations of the PD data. One of the most widely used representations is phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns. We present a method for the automated rec…

The application of hydrogen bonding analysis in X-ray crystallography to help orientate asparagine, glutamine and histidine side chains

Ian K. McDonald、Janet M. Thornton1995-01-01Protein Engineering Design and Selection

Protein X-ray crystallography produces an electron density map that rarely detects individual hydrogen atoms or distinguishes between carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the electron density. This makes it difficult to orientate the side chains of Asn, Gln and His, which appear symmetrical in the electron density; th…

Higher smectic-layer order parameters in liquid crystals determined by x-ray diffraction and the effect of antiferroelectricity

Yoichi Takanishi、Asako Ikeda、Hideo Takezoe 等 4 位作者1995-01-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

By observing the higher-order Bragg peaks corresponding to the layer spacing, the smectic-layer order parameters up to the third order were obtained and the center-of-mass distribution function along the layer normal was calculated. The results clearly indicate that the smectic layer distribution is different from a s…

Heat Treatment of Chitosan Films

Lee Yong Lim、Lucy S.C. Wan1995-01-01Drug Development and Industrial Pharmacy

Chitosan films, prepared from aqueous solutions of chitosan in 1 % v/v acetic acid, were subjected to heat treatment in an oven at known temperatures for specific durations. The effect of heat treatment on the water resistance of the films was measured by the extent of swelling and dissolution of the films in aqueous…

Saddle-splay elasticity of nematic structures confined to a cylindrical capillary

Samo Kralj、S. Žumer1995-01-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

The stability of nematic structures within a cylindrical capillary whose wall exhibits a homeotropic boundary condition is studied. The structures are obtained numerically from Euler-Lagrange equations resulting from the minimization of the Frank free energy functional. Stability diagrams are presented showing depende…

A. Krivda、Ε. Gulski、L. Satish 等 4 位作者1995-01-01IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation

This work presents further results on the use of fractal features for recognition of 3-D partial discharge patterns. Two fractal features, the fractal dimension and lacunarity were calculated from 3-D discharge patterns and their power to discriminate among various discharge patterns was analyzed. The results indicate…

Slow Motion in One-Dimensional Cahn–Morral Systems

Christopher P. Grant1995-01-01SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis

In this paper one-dimensional Cahn–Morral systems, which are the multicomponent analogues of the Cahn–Hilliard model for phase separation and coarsening in binary mixtures, are studied. In particular, there is an examination of solutions that start with initial data close to the preferred phases except at finitely man…

Database of correction parameters for the elastic scattering effects in XPS

A. Jabłoński1995-01-01Surface and Interface Analysis

Abstract The common formalism of quantitative XPS can be easily modified, with two additional correction factors β eff and Q x , to account for the elastic scattering effects. These corrections, for a given solid, depend on photolectron line, the radiation used and the XPS configuration. The database compiled in the p…
