Thermal expansion of alkali halides from 70 to 570 K

J. Rapp、H. D. Merchant1973-09-01Journal of Applied Physics

The thermal expansion of 15 alkali halides has been investigated from 70 to 570 K. The single-crystal specimens of LiF, LiCl, LiBr, NaF, NaCl, NaBr, NaI, KF, KCl, KBr, KI, RbI, CsCl, CsBr, and CsI are examined using a high-precision differential dilatometer in conjunction with an electronic micrometer. The results are…

Role of Pyruvate Carboxylase, Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase, and Malic Enzyme during Growth and Sporulation of Bacillus subtilis

Martin Diesterhaft、Ernst Freese1973-09-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

Abstract In extracts of Bacillus subtilis, CO2 fixation occurs primarily through the apparently constitutive enzyme carboxylase, which is strongly activated by acetyl-CoA. This enzyme is necessary for growth on glucose but is not required for sporulation, as was established with a carboxylase mutant. The malic enzyme…

Elastic Modulus of Vulcanizates as Related to Carbon Black Structure

A. I. Medalia1973-09-01Rubber Chemistry and Technology

Abstract The elastic modulus G f ′ of filled SBR vulcanizates has been measured as a function of strain amplitude A . At low loadings of carbon black (20 phr), where G f ′ is practically independent of A , the value of G f ′ (at 25° C, 0.25 Hz) can be predicted within 5 per eent from the gum modulus G g ′ by the Guth—…

Secondary nucleation of magnesium sulfate by fluid shear

C.Y. Sung、Joseph Estrin、G. R. Youngquist1973-09-01AIChE Journal

Abstract The secondary nucleation of magnesium sulfate due to the action of fluid forces on a seed crystal was studied by introducing the hypothesized nuclei so generated into a region of high supersaturation. The number of nuclei observed is strongly dependent on the supersaturation at the seed and the severity of sh…

Amorphous germanium III. Optical properties

G. A. N. Connell、Richard J. Temkin、William Paul1973-09-01Advances In Physics

The optical properties of thick sputtered films (∼30μ) of amorphous Ge, grown with different substrate temperatures (0ˇ-T sˇ-350°C), were obtained between 0·05 and 4·5 eV by a combination of reflectance, transmittance and ellipsometric measurements. The refractive index at 0·15 eV decreases monotonically with increasi…

A general critical-strain criterion for crazing in amorphous glassy polymers

R. J. Oxborough、P. B. Bowden1973-09-01Philosophical magazine

The critical stress for craze formation in four different grades of polystyrene has been investigated under conditions of biaxial stress with one principal stress compressive. The results are consistent with the suggestion of Sternstein and Ongchin (1969) that for crazes to form the hydrostatic component of the stress…

Effect of Microstructure on Strength of Si 3 N 4 ‐SiC Composite System

F. F. Lange1973-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The Si 3 N 4 ‐SiC composite system was investigated to better understand the effect of microstructure on the strength‐controlling factors, i.e. fracture energy, elastic modulus, and crack size. Silicon carbide dispersions with average particle sizes of 5, 9, and 32 μm were used to form 3 composite series within this s…

Electron spin resonance spectra and covalent bonding in the square-planar CuCl42− and CuBr42− ions

Chee Chow、Kun Soo Chang、R.D. Willett1973-09-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of copper-doped potassium tetrachloropalladate and potassium tetrabromopalladate have been observed. Both hyperfine and superhyperfine structures are resolved at room temperature. The CuCl42− and CuBr42− units are in a square-planar configuration. The data can be fitted with an…

Optical Properties of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

R. Dreher、G. Meier1973-09-01Physical Review A

A general theory of wave propagation in helical structures is developed. It is shown that this problem is quite similar to the well-known wave propagation in solid crystal lattices. If energy dissipation is neglected there are shown to exist frequency bands for wave propagation without attenuation separated by frequen…

Studies of the lattice parameters and domains in the phase transitions of NaNbO3

A. M. Glazer、H. D. Megaw1973-09-01Acta Crystallographica Section A

The lattice parameters of NaNbO3 have been measured to a precision between 1 part in 105 and 1 part in 104 at temperatures up to 800°C. Six distinct phases are found: P (room temperature to 373°C), R(373-480°C), S(480-520°C), T1(520-575°C), T2(575-641°C), cubic (> 641°C). Coexistence of phases S and T1 between 520 and…

Differential scanning calorimetry of the epoxy cure reaction
