Factors Affecting Design Stresses in Marine Propellers

A. W. O. Webb、C. F. W. Eames、A. Tuffrey1975-07-22OpenAlex

The paper is concerned with the development of a satisfactory basis for assessing design stresses. An attempt is made to trace the prime factors involved and details are given of corrosion fatigue tests at various mean stresses on propeller alloys in the form of heavy castings. A new philosophy of design stressing has…

On the phase transformation of SnTe

O. Valassiades、N. A. Economou1975-07-16physica status solidi (a)

Direct experimental evidence is presented concerning the transformation of SnTe. This transformation is proved to be cubic to orthorhombic. The transformation temperature is found to depend on the stoichiometry of this compound, in a way similar to that observed in the isomorphous GeTe, i.e. the transformation tempera…

Theory of the effect of dynamic strain aging on mechanical properties

A. van den Beukel1975-07-16OpenAlex

Dynamic strain aging (DSA) in solid solutions is described as diffusion of solute atoms to mobile dislocations, temporarily arrested at obstacles. As a consequence the solute concentration experienced locally by the dislocations depends on the time of arrest and the solute diffusion coefficient. Starting from this ide…

Species diversity among agnostoid trilobites

Richard A. Robison1975-07-15Fossils and strata

Most species of the suborder Agnostina are non-intergrading and best fit an allopatric model of speciation. Continued allopatry of some species is indicated by the existence of temporally correlative biofacies. Abrupt introduction of morphologically distinct agnostoid species into many areas suggests that migration of…

Analysis of Wavelength Derivative Spectra of Exciton in Cu2O

Tadashi Itoh、Shin‐ichiro Narita1975-07-15Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

The line shapes of the exciton absorption spectra of Cu 2 O at various temperatures obtained by the wavelength modulation technique have been analysed on the basis of Toyozawa's theory. The n-th exciton lines for the yellow ( n ≥-2) and the green exciton series have asymmetric Lorentzian line shape and their half valu…

Magnetoplasma Oscillation of a Layered Electron Gas

Michisuke Kobayashi、Junya Mizuno、Isaaki Yokota1975-07-15Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

The plasma dispersion of a layered electron gas in a magnetic field is calculated in the random phase approximation for the Voigt configuration. We found that the plasmon gradually changes its character from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional ones as the spacing between the planes of the layer decreases.

Functional morphology and evolution of xiphosurids

Jan Bergström1975-07-15Fossils and strata

Aspects of the morphology, evolution and systematics of the Xiphosurida are treated. The ancestral forms lacked specialization for ploughing, and their chilaria were evidently developed as prosomal walking legs. The corresponding tergite (of the pregenital segment) was probably separate from the main prosomal shield i…

On the ionic conduction in β-alumina: Potential energy curves and conduction mechanism

J. C. Wang、M. Gaffari、Sang‐Il Choi1975-07-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Potential energy curves for various carrier ions in β-alumina have been calculated. All ions except the carrier ions (Li+, Na+, Ag+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) were assumed fixed in their equilibrium positions. These ionic positions were taken from Roth’s work. In our calculation the motion of carrier ions is restricted on lines o…

Pressure and temperature dependence of electronic energy levels in PbSe and PbTe

Michael Schlüter、G. Martínez、Marvin L. Cohen1975-07-15Physical review. B, Solid state

Using recent highly accurate pseudopotential band structures of PbSe and PbTe, the variation of the smallest gap at $L$ with hydrostatic pressure and with temperature has been calculated. The experimental values of the pressure coefficient can well be reproduced assuming reasonable slopes of the pseudopotential-form-f…

Excitation energy dependence of core-level x-ray-photoemission-spectra line shapes in metals

J. W. Gadzuk、M. Šunjić1975-07-15Physical review. B, Solid state

Creation of a deep localized hole in the process of x-ray photoemission from metals is followed by a drastic rearrangement of the surrounding electrons in the Fermi sea. This rearrangement in which low-energy electron-hole pairs are produced, in analogy with gas-phase atomic shake-up processes, gives rise to a low-ene…

Second-order Raman scattering in the group-Vbsemimetals: Bi, Sb, and As

J. S. Lannin、J. M. Calleja、M. Cardona1975-07-15Physical review. B, Solid state

Second-order Raman scattering has been observed in the group-${\mathrm{V}}_{b}$ semimetals Bi, Sb, and As. Comparison of the spectra in Bi and Sb, which are primarily of even ${A}_{1g}$ symmetry, with neutron-scattering measurements indicate a predominance of overtone scattering. Variations in the form of the second-o…
