Plastic Instability of Tantalum Single Crystals Compressed at 4.2 K

Eiichi Kuramoto、Shin Takeuchi、Taira Suzuki1973-05-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Serrations due to slip were observed on the stress-strain curves of zone-refined tantalum single crystals compressed at 4.2 K. It was found on an oscillograph that each rapid stress drop was accompanied by a rapid temperature rise of about 40 K. This suggests that a discontinuous slip is caused by the plastic instabil…

Defect densities in directional media, mainly liquid crystals

M. Kléman1973-05-01Philosophical magazine

It is possible to define a local frame of reference at each point of a distorted liquid crystal, transformed from a fixed frame in the perfect crystal by a pure rotation. In the local frame the director n has constant components. A curvature tensor Kij is used to describe rotations between neighbouring frames; it obey…

Soft Modes and Superlattice Structures in NaNbO3

Koichi Ishida、Goro Honjo1973-05-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

From the study of superlattice reflections in X-ray diffraction, phase transitions at 365°C, 480°C, 520°C, 572°C and 643°C in NaNbO 3 are definitely identified by some distinct changes of the positions and intensities. The anisotropic diffuse X-ray scatterings have been studied with a special respect to the phase tran…

Hall Effect and Magnetoresistance in Pure Iron, Lead, Fe-Co, and Fe-Cr Dilute Alloys

A. K. Majumdar、L. Berger1973-05-01Physical review. B, Solid state

Hall effect and transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistances have been measured in polycrystals at 4.2 K and below, in the fields up to 7 T. For pure iron ($\frac{{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{300}}{{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{4.2}}=523 \mathrm{and} 1993$), extrapolation of the Hall angle ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{H}$ to the high-fi…

Optical absorption and electrical conduction in polyethylene

Toshikatsu Tanaka1973-05-01Journal of Applied Physics

The dependence of the optical absorption of polyethylene on photon energy is analyzed and correlated with electrical conduction. The optical gap is obtained as 7.35 eV, with a band tail of about 1 eV. Electrons transport by hopping according to μ0 exp(−Eμ/kT), where μ0 = 5 cm2/V sec and Eμ = 0.24 eV at 20–80°C. Electr…

Burgers vectors of boundary dislocations in ordered grain boundaries of cubic metals

Y. Ishida、M. McLean1973-05-01Philosophical magazine

Burgers vectors of grain boundary dislocations in important coincidence boundaries are calculated from a set of general equations derived for the three principal cubic structures. The Burgers vectors in high-order coincidence systems are mostly small in magnitude, but a large vector can occur for a coincidence system…

Spectral Reflectance of Selected Pennsylvania Soils

H. L. Mathews、Rob Cunningham、G. W. Petersen1973-05-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Spectral reflectance curves of selected soil characterization samples and standard clay minerals were studied over the wavelength interval 0.5 to 2.6µm. Results reported include reflectance data from three Hagerstown profiles and the Ap horizons of a Berks, Penn, and Ellery profile. Hagerstown soils are devel…

Solution polymerization of acrylamide to high conversion

T. Ishige、A. E. Hamielec1973-05-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract The solution polymerization of acrylamide initiated by 4,4′‐azobis‐4‐cyanovaleric acid (ACV) at high monomer concentrations in the temperature range 25–50°C has been studied. Molecular weight distributions were measured by gel permeation chromatography and by electron microscopy. Molecular weight measurements…

An experimental study on variability of measurements of skinfold thickness on young adults.

J Womersley、J. V. G. A. Durnin1973-05-01PubMed

Three observers used 3 different calipers (the Lange and two versions of the Harpenden caliper) to measure skinfold thicknesses in 27 men and 23 women on 8 to 9 occasions over a period of about 1 month. The subjects were aged between 17 and 22 years and none was obese. Measurements were made at the biceps, triceps, su…

Radiation profiles in an empty annular photoreactor with a source of finite spatial dimensions

Horacio A. Irazoqui、Jaime Cerdá、Alberto E. Cassano1973-05-01AIChE Journal

Abstract A model of radiant energy emission for tridimensional sources has been developed and used to predict radiation flux density profiles in an annular photochemical reactor. This paper presents results for a reactor without dispersion or absorption effects; that is, reflexions and refractions have been neglected…

Grain boundary dislocations in aluminium bicrystals after high-temperature deformation

G. R. Kegg、C Horton、J. M. Silcock1973-05-01Philosophical magazine

Aluminium bicrystals containing a symmetrical [011] tilt grain boundary have been examined by thin-foil electron microscopy after high-temperature shear deformation. In all tests abundant crystal shear deformation had accompanied grain boundary shear. Grain boundary dislocations were observed and their Burgers vector…

Morphology of injection‐molded polypropylene

D. R. Fitchmun、Z. Menčík1973-05-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract A surface zone composed of at least three distinct layers has been detected in injection‐molded polypropylene. The morphology of these layers as determined by optical and scanning electron microscopy forms a continuous picture from the “as‐molded” surface to the core. With the exception of the first layer whi…

Rheology of network forming systems

F. G. Mussatti、Christopher W. Macosko1973-05-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract Viscosity and dynamic shear measurements are reported on several network forming systems as a function of reaction time and temperature. Phenolic, epoxy and EPDM rubber systems are examined. Rheological data are related to the reaction kinetics of the systems. With these relations overall activation energies,…
