Energy transfer upconversion in LaF3:Pr3+

Denis J. Zalucha、John C. Wright、Francis K. Fong1973-08-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

Studies of infrared quantum counter upconversion in LaF3:Pr3+ and LaCl3:Pr3+ have led to the discovery of a process in which a red excitation photon results in the emission of a blue photon. When the 1D2 level of Pr3+ is excited by a cw rhodamine 6-G dye laser, blue fluorescence from the 3P0 level is observed. From th…

Distinction between adsorbed monolayers and thicker layers in Auger electron spectroscopy

M. P. Seah1973-08-01Journal of Physics F Metal Physics

Techniques are investigated for studying the distribution of impurity species away from grain boundary fracture surfaces. The first technique involves the measurement of the relative intensities of the various Auger electrons of the impurity species. A comparison of these intensities with those of the pure bulk elemen…

An orthopyroxene structure up to 850°C

Joseph R. Smyth1973-08-01American Mineralogist

Single-crystal X-ray intensity data have been obtained from a crystal of ferrohypersthene, M&* Feo* Ctuos SiO, at 2O, 175',280', 50O', 700', and 850'C. Refinements of the crystal structure using three dimensional data and anisotropic thermal models have been made at each temperature. Precession photographs indicate th…

Jørgen Kjems、G. Shirane、K. A. Müller 等 4 位作者1973-08-01Physical review. B, Solid state

High-resolution inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements have been performed at the cubic-rhombohedral ($\mathrm{Pm}3\mathrm{m}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{R}\overline{3}\mathrm{c}$) phase transitions in a low-mosaic flux-grown single crystal of LaA1${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. The transition occurred at (489 \ifmmode\pm\e…

Purification and Properties of the γ-Protein Specified by Bacteriophage λ: An Inhibitor of the Host RecBC Recombination Enzyme

Yoshiyuki Sakaki、Alexander E. Karu、Stuart Linn 等 4 位作者1973-08-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Previous experiments have indicated that the gam gene of bacteriophage lambda is responsible for an inhibition of the RecBC DNase-an enzyme that is essential for the major host pathway of genetic recombination. We report here experiments that define the inhibitor as the protein product of the gam gene ("gamma-protein"…

Iron-Rich Saponite (Ferrous and Ferric Forms)

Norihiko Kohyama、Susumu Shimoda、Toshio Sudô1973-08-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract Clayey fragments colored deep bluish-green are widely found in glassy rhyolitic tuffs at Oya, Tochigi Prefecture. In room-air the color changes to black or gray within one hour and finally to brown in a few weeks. The fragments are composed of an intimate mixture of two kinds of smectite: a ferrous iron-rich…

A Low‐Temperature Phase Transition in the One‐Dimensional Conductor K2Pt(CN)4Br0.30 ·x H2O

R. Comès、Marc Lambert、H. R. Zeller1973-08-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract It is shown that the linear superlattice distorsion of periodicity 6 × 2.88 Å, which was recently observed by X‐ray diffuse scattering in the one dimensional conductors of the type K 2 Pt(CN) 4 Br 0.30 · x H 2 O, looses progressively its one‐dimensional character for temperatures lower than 120 °K. This seems…

The Dehydrogenation and Dehydration of 2-Propanol Vapor on Manganese Ferrite

E. F. McCaffrey、Robert A. Ross1973-08-01Canadian Journal of Chemistry

The dehydrogenation and dehydration of 2-propanol on manganese ferrite has been studied between 306 and 362 °C. The selectivity for dehydrogenation was constant throughout the temperature range. At 362 °C a trace of condensation of the alcohol to mesityl oxide was detected, < 0.1% v/v of the reaction products.

Low Temperature Specific Heat of Ordered and Disordered FeCo

R. Kuentzler1973-08-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract Measurements of the specific heat of configurationally ordered and disordered FeCo between 1.2 and 4.2 °K are presented. The coefficients of the electronic and harmonic phonon contributions decreased on ordering (by 16% and 20%, respectively). The effects on the electronic term are mainly associated with a ch…

The application of stereo‐techniques to electron micrographs

Brad T. Hudson1973-08-01Journal of Microscopy

SUMMARY It is demonstrated that the only requisite for a true three‐dimensional image is the presence of parallax in the stereo‐pair. This parallax is introduced into electron micrographs by tilting the specimen between exposures. After deriving the usual parallax equation several examples of the use of stereo‐measure…

Diffusion of carbon in nickel

B. S. Berry1973-08-01Journal of Applied Physics

Results of Diamond and Wert on the kinetics of the reorientation of carbon pairs in nickel are used to demonstrate that the low activation energy reported by Massaro and Petersen for diffusion of carbon in nickel at 350–-700°C cannot be explained by a change in the mechanism for the lattice migration of carbon. Kenzo Shibata、Hiroshi Watanabe、Hiroshi Yamauchi 等 4 位作者1973-08-01Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Magnetization measurements were made on a single crystal of ferromagnetic MnAlGe from 4.2 K to 350 K in order to determine the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant K 1 . The saturation moment and K 1 extrapolated to 0 K are 1.70 µ B /Mn and 9.7×10 6 erg/cc, respectively. The observed temperature dependence of K 1 , a…
