We have measured the correlation range for fluctuations of the orientational order parameter in the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal $p$-methoxy benzylidene, $p\ensuremath{-}n$ butyl aniline (MBBA). The correlation range was found to diverge as ${(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c}*)}^{\frac{\ensuremath{-}1}{2}}$, in agreeme…

We have measured the valence-band density of states and the energies of the core levels of crystalline and amorphous GeTe with x-ray photoemission. The density of states of the amorphous form is found to be very similar to that of the crystal. The present results indicate that the atomic orbitals primarily determine t…

Brillouin-scattering results are reported for monodomain samples of $\ensuremath{\beta}$-methyl butyl $p$ [($p$-methoxy benzylidine)amino] cinnamate in both the smectic-$A$ and -$B$ phases. For both phases theoretical predictions are confirmed concerning the number and polarizations of the propagating hypersonic waves…

The distortions occurring due to the image formation system of the scanning electron microscope are considered with respect to their origins and their effect on the micrographs obtained. A method for evaluating the distortion and subsequently correcting angular or linear measurements made from SEM micrographs is prese…

Using temperature as a pitting criterion, a critical pitting temperature has been defined for molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels containing nominally 18% Cr which provides a quantitative measure of their pitting resistance. Single phase alloys had increasing resistance to pit initiation with increasing Mo…

The pressure required to cause a spinning solution to flow through the spinnerette hole in a wet-spinning process has been found to decrease as the take-up velocity V1 is increased. The amount of pressure reduction from free extrusion, where V1 = Vf, to V1 denoted by p(Vf)–p(V1) was found to correlate well with the te…

A series of tests have been conducted to measure the effects of fatigue loading on environmental stress crazing in PMMA. Testing in methanol has shown that long crazes are grown prior to fracture in the same manner as previously observed for constant-load conditions. An analytical model which had been used to describe…

The importance of lateral pressure in the tension and bending behaviour of yarns and fabrics is discussed. To determine the lateral pressure between fibres, a specific model is considered, that of a filament helically wound around a cylinder. The equations governing the equilibrium of the filament are derived and both…

Fluorescence transients were investigated with the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Supplementary experiments were done with Chaetoceros sp. Under weak excitation (˜103 erg/cm2sec), fluorescence transients were induced simply by die oxidation-reduction reaction of Q, the primary reductant of photosystem II. The actio…

Measurements at high temperature of integrated intensities of Bragg peaks were used to examine the defect structure in two NiO‐CoO solid solutions. The results indicate that the concentrations of vacant cation sites at 1100° to 1500°C are 4 to 10% and the tetrahedral occupations 2 to 5%. The concentration of these def…

The heat capacity of ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ has been measured between 0.3 and 10 K at pressures of 1 and 25 kbar. The results confirm that the very high electronic heat capacities measured for doped samples are characteristic of pure ${\mathrm{V}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ in the metallic phase.
