We give an overview of our current understanding of the structure of gas giant planets, from Jupiter and Saturn to extrasolar giant planets. We focus on addressing what high-pressure laboratory experiments on hydrogen and helium can help to elucidate about the structure of these planets.

The adsorption kinetics of an engineered gold binding peptide on gold surface was studied by using both quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy systems. The gold binding peptide was originally selected as a 14-amino acid sequence by cell surface display and then engineered to…

X-ray and neutron scattering studies of the lead-based family of perovskite relaxors PZN-$x$PT and PMN-$x$PT have documented a highly unusual situation in which the near-surface region of a single crystal can exhibit a structure that is different from that of the bulk when cooled to low temperatures. The near-surface…

Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental re…

Low silica type X zeolites (LSX, Si/Al = 1) fully exchanged by alkali-metal cations (Li(+), Na(+), and K(+)) were studied for their hydrogen storage capacities. Hydrogen adsorption isotherms were measured separately at 77 K and <1 atm, and at 298 K and <10 MPa. It was found that the hydrogen adsorption capacity of LSX…

The peak location of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of noble metal nanoparticles is highly dependent upon the refractive index of the nanoparticles' surrounding environment. In this study, new phenomena are revealed by exploring the influence of interacting molecular resonances and nanoparticle resonan…

We have prepared gold nanoparticles covered with N-isobutyryl-l-cysteine and N-isobutyryl-d-cysteine, respectively. These particles with a mean particle size smaller than 2 nm are highly soluble in water and are amenable to chiroptical techniques such as vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and circular dichroism (CD)…
