Infrared-active lattice vibrational spectra of α-Al2O3 and Cr2O3 have been investigated by reflection and transmission measurements on single crystal samples and also by transmission on Nujol mulled Cr2O3. Single-crystal transmission data above 700 cm−1 have been assigned to combinations and overtones.

The transport properties of electrons in CdS grown with Group I impurities which show the phenomenon of "storage" have been studied to determine the mechanism of conduction. The mobility parallel to the $c$ axis at low temperature is of the order of 1 to 10 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$/ volt sec and is very anisotropic, the mo…

Nuclear magnetic double-resonance experiments were performed on a gaseous sample containing a mixture of HD and C${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ at high pressure by observing the spin-spin multiplet in the proton-resonance spectrum and irradiating either the deuteron transitions or some of the proton transitions. The spectra show…

The Hall coefficient and electrical resistivity have been measured on single-crystal specimens of $n$-type Sn${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ between 80 and 900\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K. Data were obtained on samples in the "as grown" state, as well as on crystals which were thermally equilibrated in oxygen. A single-don…

Using symmetry arguments, the effective-mass Hamiltonian including spin-orbit interaction is derived for energy bands with extrema near the vertical edge of the hexagonal prism which represents the Brillouin zone of graphite. The energy bands in the plane normal to the vertical edge are described by k\ifmmode\cdot\els…

The edge-recombination-radiation spectrum from natural semiconducting diamond has been re-examined and compared with spectra obtained for the first time from aluminum and nominally boron-doped General Electric synthetic diamond. The intrinsic components are due to the phonon-assisted decay of free indirect excitons of…

Optical absorption and photoconductivity have been observed in the ultraviolet in single crystals of nominally pure $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. At room temperature a steep absorption edge, characteristic of a band-to-band transition, is observed at 2700 \AA{}. The edge is shift…

Experience with stainless-steel-clad fuel rods irradiated in the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor (VBWR) has shown that Type-304 stainless steel is susceptible to stress-assisted intergranular corrosion attack. Failure of over 40 fuel rods clad with this material occurred during irradiation of 950 fuel rods of several…

The relation between the grain size, the density and the sintering conditions for polycrystalline nickel ferrite has been studied for specimens prepared by a conventional ceramic technique. The contribution to the ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth due to the pores within the ferrite is considered and it is shown that…

Abstract The effect of various environmental conditions, other than chemical, on the mechanical properties of amorphous polymers is considered. The response of such polymers to an applied stress or strain depends on the mobility of polymeric chains which in turn is largely a function of free volume. The free volume va…

The theory of the thermal scattering of high energy electrons propagating through crystals is derived starting from the scattering by individual atoms, the electron before scattering being represented by a Bloch wave. The equivalence of this method with the usual quantum mechanical approach is established. Comparison…
