Improvement of Cotton Spinnability, Strength, and Abrasion Resistance by Corona Treatment

W.J. Thorsen1971-05-01Textile Research Journal

A pilot-scale corona reactor was adapted to process cotton sliver. Corona treatment improved cotton spinnability and increased yarn and fabric strength and abrasion resistance. Treatment effectiveness was greatest at 93-96°C with the injection of dilute chlorine gas into the corona cell. Dyeability was unaltered, cott…

Near Infrared Absorption Spectra of Silica: OH Overtones

C. R. Elliott、G. R. Newns1971-05-01Applied Spectroscopy

Water dissolves in fused silica to give hydroxyl groups (OH) which give rise to a fundamental absorption band at 3700 cm−1. The reaction of water with silica may be represented formally as ≡Si-O-Si≡ +H2O→2≡Si-OH. Stevenson and Jack found the extinction coefficient of the above band was 77.5±5.1 mole−1 cm−1. Other less…

Effect of Microstructure on Deformation of Polycrystalline MgO

Terence G. Langdon、Joseph A. Pask1971-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Six types of polycrystalline MgO, one nominally fully dense and the others having porosities of ∼1 to 2%, were tested in compression up to 1400°C. At 1200°C and above, all materials deformed plastically; two of the materials, both porous, also exhibited plastic flow at temperatures down to 800°C, and a third at 1000°C…

Lattice Parameters of (U,Pu)N Solid Solutions

V.J. Tennery、E.S. Bomar1971-05-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The lattice parameters of the cubic solid solutions from the system (U 1‐∞ Pu ∞ )N were measured at 25°C. The lattice constant, a 0 , of UN was 4.88918±0.00017 Å and that of PuN was 4.90476±0.00008 Å. The parameter of the solid solution does not depend linearly on the composition parameter, x. The X‐ray specimens cont…

The Thermodynamic Properties of the Nonstoichiometric Ceric Oxide at Temperatures from 900 to 1300°C

Bunji Iwasaki、Takashi Katsura1971-05-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract Oxygen partial pressure in equilibrium with nonstoichiometric ceric oxide of a definite composition were determined by equilibration with pure oxygen, air, CO2, and CO2-H2 mixtures at 900, 1000, 1100, 1227, and 1300°C, using a thermobalance. The values for the activities and the relative partial enthalpies an…

Electronic Studies of KH2PO4

J. W. Benepe、W. Reese1971-05-01Physical review. B, Solid state

The results of electrocaloric studies of the electrical equation of state of K${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ in the temperature region within 1 K of the ferroelectric transition are reported. Chief emphasis is given to determination of the spontaneous polarization. A discontinuous polarization jump of 1.87 \ifm…

The Adsorption of Water on SiO2, Al2O3, and SiO2·Al2O3. The Relation between the Amounts of Physisorbed and Chemisorbed Water

Tetsuo Morimoto、Mahiko Nagao、Junichiro Imai1971-05-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The specific surface area, the water content, and the water adsorption isotherm have been measured in order to investigate the interaction between the surfaces of SiO2, Al2O3, and SiO2·Al2O3 and water molecules. Al2O3 gives II-type adsorption isotherms and the amount of adsorbed water on it increases with a r…

Viscosity Measurements by Quasi Elastic Light Scattering in p-Azoxyanisol

Orsay Liquid Crystal Group1971-05-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

We discuss some difficulties inherent to the light scattering measurement of the viscosity coefficients in paraazoxyanisol. In contrast with a previous report, we present a unique set for these quantities, in reasonable agreement with the conventional determination by Miesowicz.

The origin of the memory effect in Cu–14.2Al–4.3Ni (W/O) alloy has been investigated using the techniques of optical microscopy and electron microscopy. As a result the following have been established. The plastic deformation is caused by the growth or creation, and the contraction or disappearance of twins inside mar…

A Low Temperature Glass-Ceramic Capacitance Thermometer

W. N. Lawless1971-05-01Review of Scientific Instruments

Dielectric measurements are reported on capacitance thermometers based on SrTiO3 crystallized from glass at 1100 and 1200°C. Multilayer experimental units, approximately 5×2×1 mm, were fabricated using pilot plant facilities and measured from 1.7 to 300 K. If both the capacitance and loss tangent are measured, the ran…
