A Biochemical Study of Human Skin Collagen and the Relation between Intra- and Intermolecular Cross-Linking *

Paul Börnstein、Karl A. Piez1964-09-01Journal of Clinical Investigation

1 The previously described 8-components (8, 11) are designated a,, for al-al and 8in for al-a2. The two al chains are assumed to be identical, since this fraction appears homogeneous. Direct evidence, however, is lacking on this point.

Characterization of Polymer Decomposition in an Inert Atmosphere by Thermogravimetry

D. A. Smith1964-09-01Rubber Chemistry and Technology

Abstract The paper reports weight loss vs temperature data for the pyrolytic decomposition of polyethylene, Polyvinylchloride; natural, styrene-butadiene and isopreneisobutene rubbers. A nonisothermal kinetic treatment is developed, based on proposals by Doyle and by Newkirk, resulting in characterization of the pyrol…

Diffusivities and solubilities of methane in linear polyethylene melts

J. L. Lundberg1964-09-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A General Papers

Abstract Diffusion coefficients of methane in linear polyethylene melts measured by simple sorption experiments are from 1.5 × 10 −5 to 3.6 × 10 −5 cm. 2 /sec. between 140.0 and 188.3°C. These diffusion coefficients are one‐third to one‐half those of methane in branched polyethylene melts at these temperatures. Solubi…

The interaction of dislocations in anisotropic face-centred cubic crystals

L. J. Teutonico1964-09-01Philosophical magazine

An elastic analysis of dislocations in anisotropic media has been applied to study the interaction of dislocations on intersecting {111} planes in the face-centred cubic structure. Both long-range and short-range interactions have been considered in a series of f.c.c. elements; the stability of each configuration resu…

The crystal structure of Ag8Ca3

L. D. Calvert、C.L. Rand1964-09-01Acta Crystallographica

Silver calcium alloys were made from 99.997% silver granules, with an analysis comparable to the spectroscopic standard for silver, and calcium, distilled from high purity granules (Dominion Magnesium Ltd) with a representative analysis, after distillation, of Mg 2 ppm, Fe 0.2 ppm, Si 0.2 ppm, Sr 0.2 ppm, Ba and other…

Mechanical Properties of Hot‐Pressed Zirconium Carbide Tested to 2600°C

M. H. Leipold、T. H. Nielsen1964-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Tensile, creep, and modulus of elasticity data were determined for hot‐pressed zirconium carbide. The material was relatively impure, containing 1 to 2% nitrogen and 1 to 2% free carbon. Tension and creep properties, which were measured to 2600° C, indicated that above 2100°C the strength was 2000 psi or lower and the…

41—THE TORQUE IN TWISTED SINGLES YARNS

R. Postle、P.D. Burton、M. Chaikin1964-09-01Journal of the Textile Institute Transactions

The expression for the torque in a twisted yarn is derived by summing the components of torque due to fibre tension, fibre torsion, and fibre bending. Of these three components, the sum of the last two is small compared with the torque due to fibre tension and hence the instantaneous torque L may be estimated simply b…

CATION EXCHANGE REACTIONS

R. Salmon1964-09-01Journal of Soil Science

Summary Wyoming bentonite, Blisworth illite, and a fen peat were saturated with different proportions of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, and exchange between these cations was studied by measuring their activity ratios in dilute equilibrium solutions. With both clays the activity ratio aMg/aCa in solution was linea…

Studies in Germanium Oxide Systems: II, Phase Equilibria in the System Na 2 O—GeO 2

M. Krishna Murthy、J. AGUAYO1964-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Phase equilibrium relations in the system Na 2 O‐GeO 2 have been determined using standard quenching techniques supplemented by differential thermal analysis. Two congruently melting compounds, Na 2 O·GeO 2 and 2Na 2 O·9GeO 2 , exist; the melting points are 1103°± 15°C and 1073°± 3°C, respectively. The eutectic temper…

Effect of Plastic Deformation On the Corrosion of Iron and Steel

N. D. Greene、G. A. Saltzman1964-09-01CORROSION

Cold work markedly decreases the corrosion resistance of steel in acid solutions. This effect has been studied by electrochemical measurements and weight loss tests on zone-refined iron and carbon steels exposed to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. The mechanism of this phenomenon is discussed in detail.

Porphyrins. VII. The synthesis of porphyrins by the Rothemund reaction

G. M. Badger、Richard A. Jones、RL Laslett1964-09-01Australian Journal of Chemistry

Three meso-tetra(o-substituted phenyl)porphins have been prepared by the Rothemund reaction, and a by-product has been isolated from one reaction mixture. The mechanism of the Rothemund reaction is discussed.

Measurement of Fabric Aesthetics

Roy Brand1964-09-01Textile Research Journal

Effective research on the aesthetic characteristies of fabries is difficult because ex plicit definitions are lacking in this field. The most reliable tool is subjective evalua tion: therefore, words ( loft, clammy, hard, etc.) become important research tools. Special meanings of these words become clear if they are l…

Production of super‐tenacity polypropylene filaments

W. C. Sheehan、Tim Cole1964-09-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract The effects of the conditions fiber formation on structural parameters and tensile properties of melt‐spun, highly isotactic polypropylene filaments were investigated to determine the feasibility of producing supertenacity polypropylene filaments. Mechanical spallation of charring ablators in hyperthermal environments

R.D. Mathieu1964-09-01AIAA Journal

Analytical results are presented for the transient ablation performance of a high-performance castable ablation resin for which spallation is responsible for the char removal. The mechanism for the spallation process is assumed to depend upon the internal stress due to the gas pressure drop through the char and a crit…

Electrical Conductivity in the System ZrO 2 —CaZrO 3

T. Y. Tien1964-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The electrical conductivity of compositions in the system ZrO 2 ‐CaZrO 3 was examined. The composition of maximum conductivity in this system is within the cubic solid‐solution region close to the low‐calcia cubic solid‐solution phase boundary. The conductivity decreases from the single‐phase cubic solid solution to b…
