Field-Induced Cholesteric—Nematic Transition and Optical Bistability

B. Kerlleñevich、A. Coche1985-03-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The hystereis of the field induced cholesteric (-) nematic transition of chiral compounds with nematics of positive dielectric anisotropy has been examined. The results show that the initial orientation of the sample is important and indicate that in those applications where a strong contrast is not essential, an init…

The Reversibility of Sodium Insertion in Transition Metal Trisulfides

Margherita Zanini1985-03-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The effects produced by the insertion of sodium in the trisulfides of titanium, niobium, and tantalum were investigated by electrochemical techniques. Cyclic voltammetry measurements were carried out in these materials using high‐temperature sodium cells which utilize the solid electrolyte β''‐alumina. The data demons…

Robert B. Falls、Beekman C. Cannon、J. A. Mandarino1985-03-01Mineralogical Magazine

Abstract Schultenite, PbHAsO 4 , known only from Tsumeb, Namibia, has been identified from a second occurrence: near North Bend, King County, Washington, USA. It occurs as euhedral crystals in a quartz-arsenopyrite-galena vein. It has a measured density of 6.07(3) g/cm 3 and a calculated density of 6.079(4) g/cm 3 . T…

Thermal Properties Of ZrTe5

Ana Smontara、K. Biljaković1985-03-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

High resolution specific heat measurements have been performed in the temperature range 60-190K. Two very weak anomalies were found around 80K and 140K. Thermal conductivity measurements have also been performed and there was no detectable anomaly. The results are discussed in view of actual proposed interpretations.

Problems of Mixed Mode Crack Propagation

E. E. Gdoutos、L. M. Brock1985-03-01Journal of Applied Mechanics

Loads and imperfections are introduced as control parameters in the potential energy, in Chapter 3. Limit points, asymmetric and symmetric bifurcation points are discussed, leading to an introduction, of expressions for the seven "elementary" catastrophes which much of the book centers on.Four of these expressions rel…

Polymerization of 2‐azabicyclo[2,2,1]heptan‐3‐one and its copolymerization with 2‐pyrrolidone

Hyun‐Nam Cho、Kil‐Yeong Choi、Sam‐Kwon Choi1985-03-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Chemistry Edition

Abstract The anionic polymerization of a bridged bicyclic lactam, 2‐azabicyclo[2,2,1]heptan‐3‐one (ABHO), was carried out in bulk and in solution under various reaction conditions. In general bulk polymerization of ABHO was superior to solution polymerization in conversion and degree of polymerization. The resulting p…

Specific Heat and Magnetocaloric Effects in TbPO4 1. Experiments

G. Üffinger、A. Kasten1985-03-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract At low temperatures TbPO 4 undergoes two successive phase transitions. Antiferromagnetic ordering along the tetragonal c ‐axis at T N1 = 2.28 K is followed below T N2 = 2.13 K by a structure of lower symmetry where the moments are tilted off the c ‐axis by about 20°. The B‐T phase diagram ( B along c ) is det…

Physicochemical Properties of Sized Yams

Sherilyn D. Slauson、Bernard Miller、Ludwig Rebenfeld1985-03-01Textile Research Journal

The physical properties of cotton and polyester/cotton blend yams sized with several two-component size formulations were evaluated. The sizing systems included starch/polyvinyl alcohol, starch/polyester, and polyvinyl alcohol/polyester. The yams were evaluated by means of tensile tests and by measurements of rupture…

Magnetoelastic surface waves in elastic ferromagnets—I: Orthogonal setting of the bias field

Gérard A. Maugin、A. Hakmi1985-03-01The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

The minimal conditions under which a surface mode of the Bleustein–Gulyaev type can be made to propagate in a ferromagnetic substrate are established within the framework of a fully nonlinear, rotationally invariant, and thermodynamically admissible continuum theory of deformable ferromagnets. It is sufficient that th…

Structural and magnetic instabilities in a twofold-degenerate band

S.K. Ghatak、D. Ray1985-03-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The question of coexistence of cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition and both paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic and -antiferromagnetic transitions in a twofold-degenerate band is studied under the Hartree-Fock approximation of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The phase diagrams for both the transitions have been worked out at…

Abstract Copolymers from styrene and a mixture of p ‐ and m ‐chloromethylstyrene were reacted with sodium cyclopentadienide in THF and precipitated in methanol at temperatures lower than −20°C to obtain soluble cyclopentadienylated polymers. Due to extensive gelation, the content of cyclopentadienyl groups could not b…

A. Zingales、Giuseppe Quartarone、Giuliano Moretti1985-03-01CORROSION

It has been suggested that the sigma phase and its preliminary phases are responsible for intergranular corrosion of molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steels in such environments as 65 wt% boiling nitric acid when the material is heat treated or when ferrite is introduced by welding. In this paper, data obtai…
