Abstract The effects of pendant groups on gas transport were investigated using a series of substituted polystyrenes. Permeability coefficients were measured at 35°C and 1 atm for He, N 2 , O 2 , CH 4 , and CO 2 , and diffusion coefficients were calculated from time lag data. The absolute permeabilities for the polyst…

Diffusion of water into silica glass was measured in the temperature range of 200° to 750° by treating the glass in air containing a constant water vapor pressure and analyzing the concentration profile using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. In the short‐time diffusion heat treatments, the surface concentrat…

An aqueous injection molding process based on the gelling properties of certain naturally occurring polysaccharides, in particular agar, and its purified derivative, agarose, is described. The materials form nonviscous solutions at temperatures near 100°C which solidify to rigid gels upon cooling below the so‐called g…

Wave functions on a Fibonacci lattice are analyzed from the multifractal point of view. An entropy function [f(\ensuremath{\alpha})] which represents the distribution of a particle probability density is obtained exactly for the state at the center of the spectrum. Numerical calculations for other states are also pres…

Data on the hydrogen release from a-C:H induced by ion irradiation have been analyzed using a statistical model based on bulk molecular recombination. Good fits were obtained for all available data by adjusting a single parameter which is correlated to the stopping power of the projectile in the material.

Abstract A review is presented of work carried out over the last 40 years on non-porous sorbents and on microporous shape-selective sorbents derived from palygorskite, smectite, and vermiculite. Among such materials four kinds of behavior were observed. In some systems uptake was restricted to external surfaces; in ot…
