Improved Ion Drag Pump

G. V. Jorgenson、E. Will1962-01-01Review of Scientific Instruments

The measured characteristics (pressure-voltage, current-voltage, and efficiency) of an ion drag pump using razor edge emitters are reported and comparisons made with theory. The advantages of this pump over one using corona point emitters are discussed.

A Study on the Twist Irregularity of Yarns Spun on the Ring Spinning Frame

Kiyohisa Fujino、Minoru Uno、Akira Shiomi 等 5 位作者1962-01-01Journal of the Textile Machinery Society of Japan

The authors studied theoretically the behavior of fiber bundles as they are delivered from the front rolls of a ring spinning frame and twisted. The causes of the long-term twist irregularity found in some yarns and their effects on yarn properties have been analyzed.

The electrical resistivity of stacking faults

A. Seeger、H. Statz1962-01-01physica status solidi (b)

Abstract A one‐electron theory of the scattering of electrons from infinitely extended stacking faults in f. c. c. metals is given for an arbitrarily shaped Fermi surface. The corresponding linearised transport problem is then solved without approximation. The wave functions are represented by expansions in terms of W…

The Effect of Material Variables on the Fatigue Life of AISI 52100 Steel Ball Bearings

T. W. Morrison、T. E. Tallian、H. O. Walp 等 4 位作者1962-01-01A S L E Transactions

The effect of material variables on the fatigue life of AISI 52100 steel in ball bearings is examined. An apparently significant negative correlation with the abundance of certain trace alloying elements has been found. An effect of gas content has not been proven. Some difference in the endurance of bearings tempered…

Notes on Epiphytic Diatoms upon Sea-weeds from Japan

Hideaki Takano1962-01-01Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics

Epiphytic diatoms found upon various sea-weeds collected from the Japanese coast were examined. Thirty-two diatoms, which seem to be main members of the epiphytic communities, are specified in this report.

Recent Developments in the Measurement of Orientation in Polymers by X-Ray Diffraction

Zigraond W. Wilchinsky1962-01-01Advances in X-ray Analysis

Abstract From pole figure data, the orientation of a crystallographic direction R in any reference direction Q in a sample can be quantitatively expressed by the average <cos 2 σ>, where σ is the angle between Q and R in a crystal. In general, <cos 2 σ> can be evaluated in terms of the experimental average…

Chemical Extraction of Potassium from Soils and Micaceous Minerals With Solutions Containing Sodium Tetraphenylboron: III. Illite

A. D. Scott、M. G. Reed1962-01-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Grundite‐illite was treated with NaBPh 4 solutions at 25° C. for various periods of time to determine the amount of K that can be removed, the rate of K removal and the effect of this treatment on the properties of the mineral. Only the first 30 me. K per 100 g. were removed from <20µ illite at a rate that…

Synthesis of polyanhydrides. III.1 Polyanhydrides of five‐membered heterocyclic dibasic acids2

Naoya Yoda1962-01-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Abstract During the course of study on the synthesis of polyanhydrides from aromatic and aliphatic dibasic acids, various types of five‐membered heterocyclic polyanhydrides was investigated. As starting materials the five‐membered heterocyclic dibasic acids, furan‐2,5‐di‐β‐propionic acid, tetrahydrofuran‐2,5‐di‐β‐prop…

THERMOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF SOME ALCOHOL–ISOCYANATE REACTIONS

Edward G Lovering、Keith J. Laidler1962-01-01Canadian Journal of Chemistry

The heats of reaction of normal-, iso-, and secondary-butyl alcohols reacting with phenyl isocyanate, the three tolyl isocyanates, and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate were measured at 25 °C, using a differential calorimeter of the Tian–Calvet type. The results are interpreted in terms of substituent effects. From bond energy…

Hydrogen Overpotential on Nickel in Alkaline Solution

A. C. Makrides1962-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The exchange current, Tafel slope, stoichiometric number, and limiting anodic current of the hydrogen reaction on nickel in 0.1 N NaOH depend on the pretreatment and the polarization history of the electrodes. The discharge step of the Volmer‐Tafel mechanism is rate‐determining on surfaces characterized by high fracti…

Copper Corrosion

D. J. G. Ives、A. E. Rawson1962-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The effects on the corrosion of copper, under the influence of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, of trace additions of salts have been studied. In the case of chloride ion, radical changes in the kinetics of dissolution and film growth processes have been observed and have been interpreted in terms of a transition…

Infrared Spectra of Dilute Solid Solutions

H. W. Morgan、P. A. Staats1962-01-01Journal of Applied Physics

The infrared spectra of polyatomic ions in dilute solid solution reflect interactions of the vibrational modes with the lattice environment. The spectra are usually characterized by very narrow bandwidths, and by frequency shifts and changes in absorption intensities which depend upon the host lattice. We have examine…

Oxidation of Silicon by High-Pressure Steam

J. R. Ligenza1962-01-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The oxidation of silicon by high‐pressure steam was studied at temperatures between 773° and 1123°K and pressures from 25 to 500 atm. Within a certain range of pressure and temperature a uniform film of amorphous silicon dioxide forms. At moderate pressures the film growth is linear in time and directly proportional t…

Anhysteretic remanent magnetization in small steady fields

B. Patton、John L. Fitch1962-01-01Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres

The phenomenon called anhysteretic remanent magnetization, ARM, has been known for a long time, but it has received relatively little attention. A knowledge of this type of magnetization is required in proper application of alternating field demagnetization techniques to rock magnetism problems. Over a wide range of l…
