Abstract The occurrence in fertilizer materials of small quantities of chemical elements not essential to plants suggests that the soil may become contaminated with these elements due to the use of fertilizers. Two experimental sites: a Nicollet clay loam fertilized with 0, 1,111, 2,222, 4,444, and 8,888 kg/ha of conc…

Abstract The X-ray photoelectron spectra of cobalt(III) complexes in an unusual spin triplet state are reported. The binding energies in the 2P spectral region are somewhat low and the spectra exhibit rather strong satellite structure. The Co 2P 1/2 -CO 2P 3/2 separations and satellite intensities appear to be related…

Abstract Biotite in deeply weathered granitic rocks in southwestern Australia has altered to exfoliated grains composed of biotite, mixed-layer clay minerals, kaolinite, vermiculite, gibbsite, goethite, and hematite. Discrete vermiculite and vermiculite-dominant mixed-layer clay minerals are not major weathering produ…

Electron–channelling imaging is a new method for observing defects in solid crystalline samples. The images are observed by scanning electron microscopy with backscattered electrons and have the same origin as the contrast observed in electron–channelling patterns. The observations reported here concern dislocations i…

Abstract Copolyamide–esters (CPAEs) were synthesized by the amide–ester interchange reaction. The change of intrinsic viscosity during CPAE synthesis was negligible. Polyamide blocks were shortened with increasing reaction time and polyester content. The polymerization degree of nylon 12 blocks on CPAE was smaller tha…

The optical mode structures of solvent cast films of different polymers have been measured with a single prism film coupler. The allowed modes define the index of refraction for light polarized in and perpendicular to the plane of the film. It is shown that the solvent coating process preferentially aligns the polymer…

The formation of a polymer in a glow discharge is a complex phenomenon, and the interpretation of the formation mechanism is not at all clarified by the misapplication of the term "polymerization". The term "polymerization" is generally accepted to mean that the molecular units (monomers) are linked together by the "p…
