Formation of surface states on the (111) surface of diamond

Bradford B. Pate、P.M. Stefan、C. Binns 等 7 位作者1981-09-01Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology

Experimental studies of the diamond (111) surface are presented. While no intrinsic surface states have been found on the 1×1 surface, our new results in ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (15 eV?hν?25 eV) show evidence of a band of surface states on the 2×2/2×1 reconstructed surface. The band of surface states (w…

Correlation of GaAs surface chemistry and interface Fermi-level position: A single defect model interpretation

R. W. Grant、J. R. Waldrop、S. P. Kowalczyk 等 4 位作者1981-09-01Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology

XPS measurements of core-level binding energies have been used to determine the interface Fermi-level position in (100) and (110) n-and p-type GaAs samples as a function of surface treatment. A variation in interface Fermi-level position of up to 0.7 eV has been observed. The difference in interface Fermi-level positi…

An analysis of crystallization by homogeneous nucleation in a 4000-atom soft-sphere model

J.N. Cape、John Finney、Leslie V. Woodcock1981-09-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

A molecular dynamics simulation of crystallization by the process of spontaneous homogeneous nucleation for a model of 4000 soft spheres with periodic boundary conditions is reported. When the amorphous system in the metastable state, at a point for which classical homogeneous nucleation theory predicts a vanishing of…

On the electronic structure of clean, 2×1 reconstructed silicon (001) surfaces

Winfried Mönch、P. Koke、Susan Krueger1981-09-01Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology

Surface photovoltage spectroscopy with clean 2×1 reconstructed Si(001) surfaces revealed indirect transitions from the bulk valence band into a band of empty surface states at (0.59 ± 0.04) eV above it. Chemisorption of atomic hydrogen is known to finally produce a Si(001)− 1×1:H structure and was found to remove thes…

Manifold effects of sodium butyrate on nuclear function. Selective and reversible inhibition of phosphorylation of histones H1 and H2A and impaired methylation of lysine and arginine residues in nuclear protein fractions.

L.C. Boffa、Rosemarie Gruss、V. G. Allfrey1981-09-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

In addition to its known effect in suppressing the deacetylation of the nucleosomal core histones, sodium butyrate in the concentration range 0.5 to 15 mM causes a selective inhibition of [32P]phosphate incorporation into histones H1 and H2A of cultured HeLa S3 cells. No commensurate general inhibition of phosphorylat…

Classification and Genesis of Spodosols in the Central Appalachians

Scott R. Stanley、Edward J. Ciolkosz1981-09-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Seventeen well‐drained pedons were sampled in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Sixteen of the pedons had well‐expressed Spodosol morphology while one had very marginal Spodosol morphology. These pedons were classified according to Soil Taxonomy and the Canadian soil classification system. The degree o…

An a b i n i t i o study of the conformational energetics of N-benzylideneaniline

Joel Bernstein、Yaakov Engel、A. T. Hagler1981-09-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

A b initio calculations employing both minimal (STO–4G) and split valence (4–31G) basis sets have been used to study the conformational energy surface of N-benzylideneaniline (NBA). The former indicate that the minimum energy conformation of NBA corresponds to a rotation about the N–phenyl bond of ≊ 45° and a rotation…

Paul S. Bagus、A. R. Williams1981-09-01IBM Journal of Research and Development

This paper reviews the history of IBM contributions over the last quarter century to electronic structure theory. The two main sections of the paper deal with large-scale computations in quantum chemistry and the study of the electronic structure of solids. The paper briefly discusses the methods of ab initio quantum…

Weathering of glauconites: reversal of the glauconitization process in a soil profile in western France

Christian Courbe、B. Velde、Alain Meunier1981-09-01Clay Minerals

Abstract Polarizing microscope, electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction examination of minerals in a soil profile developed on a glauconite sand indicate that destabilization of glauconite can be a progressive process which appears to be the reverse of glauconitization. Glauconite in these soils appears to be destab…
