It is shown that the different antiferromagnetic arrangements of ordered magnetic spins in the identical lattices of α-Fe 2 O 3 and Cr 2 O 3 can be explained by the overlap of suitably directed oxygen p orbitals and the differently populated d orbitals of the Fe 3+ and Cr 3+ ions.
