Determination of the molar absorptivity of dissolved carbonate in basanitic glass

J. E. Dixon、Vivian Pan1995-12-01American Mineralogist

Basanitic glasses with known dissolved C concentrations have been analyzed using infrared spectroscopy to calibrate the molar absorptivity of carbonate. C is dissolved as carbonate complexes in the glass resulting in absorption bands at 1525 and 1425 cm−1. Molar absorptivities of 283 ± 8 L/(mol·cm) were determined for…

Synchrotron X-ray Scattering Studies of Crystallization of Poly(ether-ether-ketone) from the Glass and Structural Changes during Subsequent Heating-Cooling Processes

Alain M. Jonas、Thomas P. Russell、Do Young Yoon1995-12-01Macromolecules

The evolution of structural parameters characterizing the semicrystalline morphology of poly(aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK), and its blends with poly(aryl-ether-imide) (PEI), has been determined as a function of temperature by means of small-angle (SAXS) and wide-angle (WAXS) X-ray scattering studies, using synchrotr…

Dielectric relaxation of liquids at the surface of a porous glass

Jon A. Schuller、Ranko Richert、Е. W. Fischer1995-12-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We have measured the dielectric relaxation of the glass-forming liquid N-methyl-$\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$-caprolactam (as a representative of nonassociating liquids of low molecular weight) confined to the mesopores of a controlled porous glass with 102 \AA{} pore diameter. Three distinct relaxation peaks within ${\e…

A Mechanistic Study of the Effects of Nitrogen on the Corrosion Properties of Stainless Steels

P. R. Levey、A. van Bennekom1995-12-01CORROSION

The effects of nitrogen alloying on the corrosion properties of stainless steels (SS) is a matter of debate. A number of apparently contradictory results have been presented by various researchers. The actual mechanism by which nitrogen alloying influences the corrosion properties of SS has been the topic of even more…

Characterizing trace metal adsorption on kaolinite

K. M. Spark、J. D. Wells、Bruce B. Johnson1995-12-01European Journal of Soil Science

Summary Adsorption of Cu(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) on kaolinite has been investigated at 25°C as a function of pH, concentration of the substrate, and the nature and concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The adsorption edges for three metals (Zn(II), Co(II) and Cd(II)) showed clear evidence of two distinct…

A virtual interface method for extracting growth rates and high temperature optical constants from thin semiconductor films using in situ normal incidence reflectance

W.G. Breiland、Kevin Killeen1995-12-01Journal of Applied Physics

A method is presented in which both optical constants and growth rates may be simultaneously extracted from the in situ normal incidence reflectance of a growing thin film. The method employs a virtual interface model, thus avoiding cumulative errors that are encountered if a standard multiple-layer model is used. No…

Rigid unit modes in framework silicates

Martin T. Dove、Volker Heine、Kenton D. Hammonds1995-12-01Mineralogical Magazine

Abstract We describe a model for framework silicates in which the SiO 4 (and AlO 4 ) tetrahedra are treated as perfectly rigid and freely jointed. From this model we are able to identify low-energy modes of distortion of the structure, which we call Rigid unit modes. These modes can act as soft modes to allow easy dis…
