On making holes in a sheet of fluid

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor、D. H. Michael1973-05-22Journal of Fluid Mechanics

It is suggested in this paper that axisymmetric holes in thin sheets of fluid in which surface tension forces predominate will open out if they are initially large in relation to the thickness of the sheet; but that small holes will close up. No exact criterion has been found for the critical hole size in a free falli…

Precession of Positive Muons in Nickel and Iron

M. L. G. Foy、Neil Heiman、W. J. Kossler 等 4 位作者1973-05-21Physical Review Letters

Polarized ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$ were stopped in Ni and Fe. The magnetic fields at the site of the muons, the initial polarization, and the depolarization time constant were obtained from 300 to 700\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K, i.e., through the Curie temperature of Ni. This experiment demonstrated that prec…

Virtual recharge: Mechanism of radiationless transition in scheelite and fergusonite type crystals doped with rare-earth ions

E. G. Reut、A. I. Ryskin1973-05-16physica status solidi (a)

Radiationless transitions in scheelite and fergusonite type crystals have been studied. It is shown that these transitions can be realized by virtual recharge for the ions having the tendency to form a tetravalent state (Pr3+, Tb3+). The probability of this process is greater than that of multi-phonon relaxation.

The elastic constants of MnAs

M. Dörfler、K. Bärner1973-05-16physica status solidi (a)

The tensor of elastic constants of MnAs in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states is evaluated from bending vibrations of straight and helical MnAs whiskers. The isotropic compressibility, predicted by the Bean-Rodbell model to be 4.6 × 10−12 dyn−1 cm2 and the same in both phases, is found experimentally to be (4.3…

Raman Scattering and Photoluminescence in Boron-Doped and Arsenic-Doped Silicon

J. M. Cherlow、R. L. Aggarwal、B. Lax1973-05-15Physical review. B, Solid state

The deformation potentials and $g$ values of the ground state of the boron acceptor in silicon have been determined from a study of the stress and Zeeman splitting of the electronic Raman scattering in this material. The stress splitting of the Raman line results from a twofold splitting of the ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_…

Direct current conduction in ammonium and potassium dihydrogen phosphate

L. B. Harris、G. J. Vella1973-05-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

Experiment, plus critical discussion of previous work, suggests the following. Conductivity is primarily due to the migration of L defects (proton vacancies), the enthalpy for L-defect mobility being 0.53 eV in KDP and 0.46 eV in ADP. Such L defects are produced by impurities, but there is an additional tendency towar…

Cross-Linking of Collagen

Marvin L. Tanzer1973-05-11Science

The formation of collagen cross-links is attributable to the presence of two aldehyde-containing amino acids which react with other amino acids in collagen to generate difunctional, trifunctional, and tetrafunctional cross-links. A necessary prerequisite for the development of these cross-links is that the collagen mo…
