Investigation of penetration abilities of various oils into human hair fibers

Karin Keis、Dave Persaud、Y. K. Kamath 等 4 位作者2006-01-27International Journal of Cosmetic Science

In this work we have explored capillary adhesion between hair fibers treated with different types of oils. With coconut, olive, and sunflower oils the capillary adhesion was found to decrease with time, but not with mineral oil. Application of heat reduced the capillary adhesion further for coconut and sunflower oils.…

Effect of wood powder on polymer foam nucleation

Denis Rodrigue、Slimane Souici、Eddy Twite‐Kabamba2006-01-27Journal of Vinyl and Additive Technology

Abstract It is usually reported that wood particles in wood/polymer composite foams can act as nucleating sites. Since high wood contents are used, it is difficult to determine exactly the effect of wood particles. In this study, LDPE was chemically foamed in a twin‐screw extruder, and small amounts of wood (0–5 phr)…

Molecular dynamics in n-alkanes: Premelting phenomena and rotator phases

A. Marbeuf、Ross Brown2006-01-27The Journal of Chemical Physics

Molecular dynamics simulations of the n-alkanes C18H38, C19H40, and C20H42 are reported for temperatures just below the melting point. Besides thermodynamic and average structural data for the ordered phase, we discuss the molecular motions initiating the rotator phases observed in spontaneous phase transitions in iso…

Monoliths of Aligned Silica-Polypeptide Hexagonal Platelets

Enrico G. Bellomo、Timothy J. Deming2006-01-27Journal of the American Chemical Society

Water soluble alpha-helical polypeptides were used to prepare silica coated hexagonal single crystal platelets in concentrated solutions. To our knowledge, there is no other instance where polymer single crystals, typically formed under high dilution, can be grown in a bulk material. This unprecedented self-assembly p…

Vittoria Pischedda、G. R. Hearne、A. M. Dawe 等 4 位作者2006-01-27Physical Review Letters

At 300 K ultrafine $\ensuremath{\sim}6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{nm}$ grain-size nanoanatase retains its structural integrity up to 18 GPa. There is progressive pressure-induced structural disorder to a highly disordered state at $P>18\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GPa}$. Signatures of short-range order persist to well beyon…

R. Przeniosło、A. Palewicz、M. Regulski 等 6 位作者2006-01-27Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

High resolution neutron powder diffraction has been applied to verify the model of distorted cycloidal magnetic modulation proposed on the basis of NMR studies of the multiferroic BiFeO 3 in Zalesskii et al (2000 Europhys. Lett. 50 547). Our experimental results do not support the model of magnetic modulation given by…

Polymorphism Versus Thermochromism: Interrelation of Color and Conformation in Overcrowded Bistricyclic Aromatic Enes

P. Ulrich Biedermann、John J. Stezowski、Israel Agranat2006-01-27Chemistry - A European Journal

The nature of the thermochromic form of overcrowded bistricyclic aromatic enes (BAEs) has been controversial for a century. We report the single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of the deep-purple and yellow polymorphs of 9-(2,7-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-9H-xanthene (11), which revealed the molecules in a twisted…

Imperative irradiation: A large enantiomeric excess in a liquid-crystal phase can be induced by circularly polarized light (CPL) as an external stimulus, and an imbalance in the two chiral domains becomes remarkable in the BX phase (see pictures), which is similar to the B4 phase made up by classical bent-core mesogen…
