A Criterion for the Onset of Instability at a Turning Point

Rafael D. Sorkin1981-10-01The Astrophysical Journal

A very general sufficient condition for the onset of "thermodynamic" instability at a turning point is proved, assuming essentially nothing beyond the smoothness of the equilibrium-sequence in question.

Heat capacity and other thermodynamic properties of linear macromolecules. IV. Polypropylene

Umesh Kumar Gaur、Bernhard Wunderlich1981-10-01Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data

The heat capacity of polypropylene from 0 K to 600 K is reviewed on the basis of measurements on 20 samples reported in the literature. The crystallinity dependence is critically evaluated and a set of recommended data for completely crystalline and amorphous polypropylene are derived. The effect of tacticity on the h…

A Review of Particle-Contaminated Gas Breakdown

J.R. Laghari、A. H. Qureshi1981-10-01IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation

The sensitivity of compressed gases to free and fixed conducting and non-conducting particle contaminants is a limiting factor in the design of electrical apparatus. Conducting particles which may result from damage to a gas-filled system constitute a serious threat to its safe and reliable operation. This deteriorati…

PTC Effect in BaTiO 3 as a Function of Doping with 3d Elements

H. Ihrig1981-10-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The electrical resistivities, grain sizes, and charge carrier densities of Sb‐doped PTC‐type BaTiO 3 ceramics were measured as a function of additional doping with 3d ions of varying concentrations. From analysis of the PTC characteristics on the basis of Heywang's model it proved possible to derive grain‐surface acce…

A Changing Capacitor Technology - Failure Mechanisms and Design Innovations

David G. Shaw、S. W. Cichanowski、A. Yializis1981-10-01IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation

During the past few years the ac capacitor industry has seen almost a complete change in dielectrics, electrodes, and impregnants. The dielectric has changed from paper to all poly-propylene film, the electrode from plain foil to either metallized film, metallized paper, or embossed foil, and the fluids have changed f…

Lithium Incorporation by V 6 O 13 and Related Vanadium (+4, +5) Oxide Cathode Materials

D. W. Murphy、P. Christian、F. J. DiSalvo 等 5 位作者1981-10-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The known vanadium oxides VO 2 + y ( 0 ≤ y < 0.5 ) have been examined as cathode materials in ambient temperature nonaqueous secondary lithium cells. The discharge products have also been chemically prepared and characterized by x‐ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and magnetic susceptibility. The best cathode materia…

Effect of ionizing radiation on the chemical composition, crystalline content and structure, and flow properties of polytetrafluoroethylene

W. Keith Fisher、J. C. Corelli1981-10-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Chemistry Edition

Abstract This article describes a study of ionizing radiation‐induced changes in the chemical composition, crystalline content and structure, and flow properties in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Irradiatins conducted in the presence of oxygen cause acid fluoride end groups to be formed, which on exposure to water va…

SETCOL — A Technologically Simple and Reliable Method for Measuring Phytoplankton Sinking Rates

Paul K. Bienfang1981-10-01Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences

A simple and reliable method for measuring the sinking rate of phytoplankton is described. This technique is suitable for both heterogeneous field populations and unialgal in vitro cultures. The procedure involves use of settling columns initially containing a uniformly mixed population of cells, and calculates a sink…

The crystal and molecular structure of oxovanadium(V) orthophosphate dihydrate, VOPO4,2H2O

H. Tietze1981-10-01Australian Journal of Chemistry

The structure of a tetragonal crystal of the title compound was determined by X-ray diffraction. The space group was found to be P 4/nmm with a 6.202(2) and c 7.410(1) Å and Z 2. The structure consists of infinite sheets of distorted VO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra linked by shared oxygen atoms. Shared water molecule…

Molecular mechanics for phase transition and melting of n-alkanes: A spectroscopic study of molecular mobility of solid n-nonadecane

G. Zerbi、Roberto Magni、Mariangela Gussoni 等 6 位作者1981-10-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

n-Nonadecane shows a phase transition from orthorhombic to so called α phase near 22.8 °C and melts at 32 °C. Temperature dependence studies of infrared and Raman spectra of n-nonadecane and of selectively deuterated nonadecanes (2D2 and 10D2) allow one to obtain a detailed description of the structural changes which…

Anthony A. Kossiakoff、Steven A. Spencer1981-10-01Biochemistry

A neutron structure analysis at 2.2-A resolution has been performed on bovine trypsin covalently inhibited by a transition-state analogue, the monoisopropylphosphoryl (MIP) group. The unique ability of neutron diffraction to locate hydrogen atoms experimentally has allowed the determination of the protonation states o…

The possibility of defining structural defects in amorphous solids in terms of parameters such as atomic-level internal stresses and local symmetry coefficients was proposed in a previous paper (Egami, Maeda and Vitek 1980). Using a model amorphous structure generated by a computer, these parameters are statistically…
