On the treatment of negative intensity observations

Simon French、Khayali Sherell Wilson1978-07-01OpenAlex

A method is described which produces sensible estimates of structure factor moduli from intensity observations, whether the latter are positive or negative. Preliminary applications of the method to data from the protein phosphorylase b are summarized.

Fluorescence probe measurement of the intralysosomal pH in living cells and the perturbation of pH by various agents.

S Ohkuma、Brian D. Poole1978-07-01OpenAlex

A quantitative method is described for the measurement of intralysosomal pH in living cells. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (FD) is endocytized and accumulates in lysosomes where it remains without apparent degradation. The fluorescence spectrum of this compound changes with pH in the range 4-7 and is not…

Induced anisotropy in a glassy material of the As-S system

V E Karnatovskiĭ、V. G. Tsukerman1978-06-30Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics

The anisotropic properties of some chalcogenide glassy semiconductors changed under the influence of temperature and laser radiation of 0.63 μ wavelength. The induced anisotropy was found to be a function of the composition and previous history of a sample, and was associated with the appearance of nuclei of a new pha…

Thermodynamic states and symmetry of liquid crystals

S. A. Pikin、V. L. Indenbom1978-06-30Soviet Physics Uspekhi

All the diverse types of liquid-crystalline states can be described in a unified manner by analogy with the group-theoretical description of the symmetry and properties of crystals. The symmetry properties of liquid crystals with respect to the orientation of the molecules, and the conditions for the appearance of a m…

Deformation and breakup of a single slender drop in an extensional flow

Andreas Acrivos、Tak Shing Lo1978-06-28Journal of Fluid Mechanics

The deformation and conditions for breakup of a single slender drop placed symmetrically in a uniaxial extensional flow are examined theoretically. For the case of an inviscid drop in zero-Reynolds-number flow, Buckmaster (1972) showed, using slender-body analysis, that the shape of the drop is given by r ≡ε R ( z )=ε…

Attenuation of low-frequency elastic oscillations in KH2PO4-type ferroelectric crystals

С. А. Гриднев、Б. М. Даринский1978-06-16physica status solidi (a)

The internal friction (Q−1) in KH2PO4, RbH2PO4, and RbH2AsO4 crystals is investigated using the torsion pendulum technique at frequencies of some Hz in the temperature range from −240°C to the crystal decomposition temperature. The low frequency mechanism of the Q−1 in the vicinity of the Curie point for the crystals…

A calculation of orientational relaxation in nematic liquid crystals

Michael G. Clark、Frank M. Leslie1978-06-16Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Abstract This paper discusses the transition in a nematic liquid crystal from a strongly distorted orientation of the anisotropic axis to uniform alignment in a situation of some practical interest. If a nematic with positive dielectric or diamagnetic anisotropy is initially at rest between parallel plates with the an…

Atomic arrangement in tellurite glasses studied by neutron diffraction

S. Neov、I. Gerassimova、K. Krezhov 等 5 位作者1978-06-16physica status solidi (a)

A structural model on tellurite glasses, based on neutron diffraction data, is proposed. The coordination scheme of Te is determined and the binding system of the basic coordination polyhedra is establihsed. The role of the modifier (Fe2O3) in the glasses is discussed. The atomic density radial distribution function o…

Thermally stimulated and tunneling luminescence and frenkel defect recombination in KCl and KBr at 4.2 to 77 K

D. E. Aboltin、V. J. Grabovskis、Andris Kangro 等 7 位作者1978-06-16physica status solidi (a)

The thermally stimulated and tunneling luminescence spectra of X-irradiated KCl and KBr, as well as thermal bleaching and thermally stimulated current of X-irradiated KBr are studied at 4.2 to 77 K. The activation energies of I- and H-centre thermal diffusion are determined. The possibilities of radiative tunneling ch…

Theory of surface phonons in amorphous silica

R. B. Laughlin、John D. Joannopoulos1978-06-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

A new theoretical approach to studying surface vibrations in amorphous solids is applied to silicon dioxide. The method entails modeling the surface as a Bethe lattice with a dangling bond, and treating the two-dimensional nature of the surface and the surface topography as small perturbations. The theory successfully…

Phonon magnification in cubic crystals

J. R. Philip、K. S. Viswanathan1978-06-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

A method has been suggested to evaluate the phonon magnification for any general direction inside a cubic crystal. The method consists in establishing the functional relationship between the polar variables (${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{s},{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{s}$) of the group-velocity vector $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\ri…

Ultrasonic investigation of the nonlinearity of fused silica for different hydroxyl-ion contents and homogeneities between 300 and 3°K

John H. Cantrell、M. A. Breazeale1978-06-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The harmonic-generation technique was used to measure the third-order elastic constants ${C}_{111}$ of four types of fused silica. The samples differed in amount of OH content and directional homogeneity. The results indicate that a relatively large OH content in fused silica may give rise to a relatively greater valu…

Synthesis of covalently-linked dimeric porphyrins

John B. Paine、David Dolphin1978-06-15Canadian Journal of Chemistry

Dimeric porphyrins covalently linked directly at their periphery (β,β′-biporphyrins) or via a hydrocarbon chain (CH 2 ) n , where n = 1–8, have been synthesized from the corresponding β,β′-linked bispyrroles.

Effect of neutron irradiation on the density of low-energy excitations in vitreous silica

Terrance L. Smith、P.J. Anthony、A. C. Anderson1978-06-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Neutron irradiation of vitreous silica produces changes of the same relative magnitude in the low-temperature excess specific heat ${C}_{\mathrm{ex}}$, the anomalous thermal conductivity $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, and the anomalous temperature dependence of ultrasonic velocity, $\frac{\ensuremath{\Delta}v}{v}$. It is ther…
