The Drude tail due to photo-excited carriers in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been observed in the mid-infrared region by using combination spectroscopy of synchrotron radiation and Ti:sapphire laser. It is found that the density of photo-excited carriers increases as the sample temperature is raised from…

The Cellular Potts Model (CPM) successfully simulates drainage and shear in foams. Here we use the CPM to investigate instabilities due to the flow of a single large bubble in a dry, monodisperse two-dimensional flowing foam. As in experiments in a Hele-Shaw cell, above a threshold velocity the large bubble moves fast…

In this paper we present structures and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the methylated silicon (111) surface from quantum chemical calculations using both cluster models and periodic boundary conditions. The results from both calculations are in very good agreement with experimentally determined frequencies. We d…

The ability to change the properties of solid surfaces on demand is a key component of a multitude of established and emerging technologies. Stimuli that have previously been used to trigger changes in surface properties include changes in solvent, light, pH, ionic strength, temperature and magnetic or electric fields…

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) performed down to small q values (q <or= 10(-3) A(-1)) is a powerful method for investigating the arrangement of filler aggregates in filled elastomers under uniaxial strain. Meanwhile, for vulcanized samples, zinc oxide is used as an additive. Owing to their high contrast, the ZnO…

A method is presented to automatically locate a crystal and its holder for centring on a goniometer spindle and alignment with an X-ray beam. Here, a novel algorithm that has been developed and tested with the images of users' crystals saved in an annotated database is described. The algorithm improves on the difficul…

Suzuki couplings were used to efficiently introduce porphyrin, fluorene, and bithiophene chromophores on the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The nanotube-bound chromophores imparted good solubility to the product and exhibited fluorescence quenching due to photoinduced electron transfer to the nanotubes.
