In the course of a high-temperature x-ray diffraction study of tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/, a number of previously unreported reflections, which are inconsistent with a body-centered lattice, hare been observed. The intensities of most of these reflections are rather low, but the strongest of these (the (102) reflection) wa…
The fundamental and idealized kinetics of luminescence phenomena in crystalline materials are reviewed. Luminescent decay modes are distinguished on the basis of their time histories into three general categories: the exponential, bimolecular, and electron trap laws. Expressions for the decay of emission intensity are…

A system for levitating liquid metal using a high frequency levitating coil surmounted by a stabilizing ring is described. By adjustment of the ring relative to the coil the liquid metal can be stabilized and steered to any desired position in the system.
Crystal structures, electrical and magnetic properties of Sr(NiW) 0.5 O 3 -Ba(NiW) 0.5 O 3 system were studied in the temperature range from room temperature to about 400°C. The compound of strontium undergoes a phase transition at about 260°C, where the crystal structure which is perovskite-like changes from tetragon…
Abstract The photoisomerization of cis- and trans-azobenzene in an n-hexane solution has been studied in the n-π* and π-π* absorption wave-length regions. The rate of isomerization has always been found to be proportional to the product of the incident light intensity and the concentration of cis- or trans-azobenzene.…
The relationship between the discharge and the depth at the brink of a freely discharging circular section is investigated. Through application of the momentum equation between a section upstream from the brink and a section downstream from the brink, the limits for the brink depth are established from theory. Experim…
Dynamic mechanical loss of solution-grown polyethylene crystals is measured by the suspension method as a function of temperature and the crystalline dispersion (α dispersion) is observed above 40°C in just the same manner as in melt-grown polyethylene. In the temperature range of this dispersion, the ratio of crystal…

Abstract The rate of decomposition of dicumyl peroxide in natural rubber has been measured at four temperatures and the results lead to the expression k = 3.9 × 1013e−32500/RT for the rate constant. The crosslinking efficiency is high and is constant over the range 110 to 140°C. The low values found for the ratio of a…
Explosively generated plane waves were passed through plates of duraluminum, iron, and steels of various compositions and heat treatments. X-cut quartz disks of large diameter-to-thickness ratios (≥5) were used to obtain continuous stress-time profiles of elastic-plastic wave structures associated with yielding. For t…

Electron transmission microscopy and selected area diffraction have shown that the dislocation loops in aluminium bombarded with 38 Mev alpha-particles lie generally upon the {110} planes with a [110] Burgers vector normal to the loop. These loops are only seen where the alpha-particles come to rest. The theory of dif…
The composition of the equilibrium mixtures obtained on mixing known amounts of flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and reduced FMN (FMNH2) were studied by spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, and E.S.R. spectrometry. The major component of the mixtures containing more than 2mM total flavin is a species absorbing at 900 millimicro…
Abstract A good yield (97%) of MgBH 4 is obtained by interaction of magnesium hydrides with diborane in a glycol ether medium or a mixture of glycol ether and benzene (1:3) at 80°. Interaction of the borohydride with boron trichloride in benzene at ∼80° gives a 94% yield of diborane.
