High Temperature Properties and Decomposition of Inorganic Salts Part 3, Nitrates and Nitrites

Kurt H. Stern1972-07-01OpenAlex

The literature dealing with the high-temperature behavior of inorganic nitrates and nitrites has been critically reviewed. Values of (GTo−H298o)/T of the reactants and products of the decomposition reactions were calculated and have been tabulated from 298 K up to as high a temperature as possible. Equilibrium constan…

Nematic-Liquid-Crystal Order—A Monte Carlo Calculation

P. A. Lebwohl、Gordon Lasher1972-07-01OpenAlex

The lattice version of the Maier-Saupe model of a nematic liquid crystal, in which all molecules are restricted to be on a simple-cubic lattice with periodic boundary conditions and to interact only with their nearest neighbors through the interaction energy ${E}_{\mathrm{ij}}=\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon}(\frac…

A Quantum Theory of Double Exchange. I

Kenn Kubo、N. Ohata1972-07-01OpenAlex

Metallic double-exchange ferromagnets such as doped LaMnO 3 are investigatd on the basis of an efffective Hamiltonian derived from the s - d model Hamiltonian. Resistance at low temperatures is calculated in the spin wave approximation and it is found to be proportional to T 9/2 . Magnetic behaviors of the system at f…

Dynamics of the Orientation of a Nematic-Liquid-Crystal Film in a Variable Magnetic Field

F. Brochard、P. Pierański、E. Guyon1972-06-26Physical Review Letters

The transient distortions, induced in a nematic film by a stepwise increase (or decrease) of the magnetic field around the threshold value ${H}_{c}$, are accurately measured by conoscopic techniques. The results can be interpreted by the Leslie equations and provide a measurement of a viscosity coefficient.

Synthèse et caractérisation de copolymères séquencés polyoxyéthylène/poly‐ε‐caprolactone

Rémi Perret、A. Skoulios1972-06-26Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Solid Surface Shape and the Alignment of an Adjacent Nematic Liquid Crystal

Dwight W. Berreman1972-06-26OpenAlex

We show that elastic strain energy may account for the tendency of some nematic liquid crystals to lie parallel to the direction of rubbing on a solid surface that has been slightly deformed by rubbing, or perpendicular to a surface that is slightly rough in two dimensions.

Unseparated Rare Earth Cobalt Oxides as Auto Exhaust Catalysts

L.A. Pedersen、W. F. Libby1972-06-23Science

SINCE MEADOWCRAFT REPORTED THAT STRONTIUM-DOPED LACO03 WAS COMPARABLE TO PLATINUM AS AN OXYGEN ELECTRODE, THE TESTING OF THE CATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF LACO03 ON CERTAIN GAS SYSTEMS HAS BEEN PURSUED. THIS PARTICULAR RARE EARTH COBALT OXIDE AGAIN HAD ACTIVITY WHICH RIVALED PLATINUM. THE COMPOUND WAS SUGGESTED AS A CANDIDATE…

Experimental results given in Part I and II are interpreted with the help of a band scheme including five energy levels: β (1.91 eV above the VB, due to exciton—neutral acceptor complexes creation with 0.1 eV binding energy), A (0.55 eV above the VB, copper vacancies V), B (0.76 eV above A, [V—V] vacancy associations)…

Electron-Paramagnetic-Resonance Spectrum ofMo5+in SrTiO3-An Example of the Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect

Brian W. Faughnan1972-06-15Physical review. B, Solid state

The EPR spectrum of ${\mathrm{Mo}}^{5+}$ in SrTi${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ at $T=1$. 65 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K is reported. The spectrum is stable in suitably prepared samples or light-induced (3900-4300-\AA{} light) in photochromic samples, and can only be observed at liquid-helium temperatures. The $g$ tensor…

Isotopic Exchange Between Hydrogen and Water Vapor over Supported Metal Catalysts. Part I. Kinetics of the Exchange

J. H. Rolston、J. W. Goodale1972-06-15Canadian Journal of Chemistry

Some rate data for the transfer of a deuterium atom tracer between hydrogen and water vapor, catalyzed by platinum supported on γ-alumina, are reported. Above 100 °C the transfer rate measured at 1 atm total pressure is shown to be free of mass transfer effects, and obeys an initial first order dependence on water vap…

Pressure Dependence of Ionic Conductivity in KCl, NaCl, KBr, and NaBr

Duk N. Yoon、David Lazarus1972-06-15Physical review. B, Solid state

The pressure dependence of the ionic conductivity of KCl, NaCl, KBr, and NaBr has been measured to 6 kbar in the intrinsic and extrinsic temperature regions. In the intrinsic region the conductivity deviates markedly from a simple exponential decrease with pressure. A detailed analysis, including contributions from an…

Auger Electron Spectroscopy Investigations of the Surface Chemical Composition of Vanadium, the Vanadium Oxides, and Oxidized Vanadium: Chemical Shift and Peak Intensity Analysis

F. J. Szalkowski、G.A. Somorjai1972-06-15The Journal of Chemical Physics

The Auger spectra of vanadium metal and of the oxides VO0.92, V2O3, and VO2 have been studied. Chemical shifts on the order of 0.6 eV per oxidation number have been observed for the vanadium inner shell Auger transitions. Relative intensities of the oxygen and vanadium Auger peaks could be used to determine the surfac…

R. M. A. Azzam、N. M. Bashara1972-06-15Physical review. B, Solid state

The polarization properties of the various diffracted orders from a grating are determined ellipsometrically. The ratio ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{m}$ of the far-field complex reflection coefficients for the $p$ and $s$ polarizations for any order $m$ is measured. This information is complementary to the data available fro…

Koichi Mizushima、Mitsuaki Tanaka、Shūichi Iida1972-06-15Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

By changing the location of Fermi level of TiO 2 by lithium doping, ESR signals of some transition metal impurities in this crystal were pursued. The conclusions are: the Cr 3+ , Mn 4+ and Fe 3+ levels are near or overlapped with the valence band, the V 3+ , Mn 2+ and Fe 2+ levels are near the conduction band, the Cr…

A Microscopic Theory on the Phase Transitions in NH4Br –An Ising Spin Phonon Coupled System–

Yasusada Yamada、Masahiro Mori、Yukio Noda1972-06-15Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

CsCl type NH 4 Br crystal has been treated as an Ising spin-phonon coupled system to explain the phase transitions associated with the orientational order of NH 4 + ions. The appearance of two ordered phases is explained as essentially due to the fact that the direct interaction between NH 4 + ions stabilizes parallel…
