Abstract Much past confusion has originated from attempts to describe the complete optical properties of a plastic in terms of a few ill‐defined parameters. Simple light‐scattering theory and studies of morphology have been combined in this article to suggest the causes of polymer opacity; methods cited for the improv…

The geometrical properties of 2-bar full-set fabrics are considered in terms of two models; one in which there is a great deal of friction, so that parts of the structure are isolated from each other, and one in which this friction can be neglected. Il is shown that the model with the frictional restraint appears to p…

The elastic constants of a (73.8% Ni-26.2% Fe) ferromagnetic alloy have been measured at 300°K with the following results: C11=23.04, C12=14.44, and C44=11.92 (in units of 1011 dyn cm−2). These results are compared with previously reported work on pure Ni and a (30% Ni-70% Fe) alloy.

A low‐pressure gas plasma of oxygen ions has been used as the electrolyte for anodizing evaporated aluminum films on glass substrates. The oxide film grows at 22Aå/v at low voltages, while above 50v, the growth rate is somewhat less. Films have been anodized up to 90v. Capacitors formed of such plasma anodized aluminu…

Abstract The proposition that hydrolysis may account for the selective adsorption of heavy metals by clay surfaces is compared with an alternate explanation of specific exchange of the metal with weakly dissociable H + . It is shown that past evidence offered in support of the two hypotheses is somewhat ambiguous. The…

SummaryExperiments investigating a novel method of preparing composite coatings are described. In this method, the dispersed phase, which may be fibrous or granular, is incorporated into a metallic matrix by suspending the fibres or particles in a plating bath suitable for electroplating the matrix material. According to a theory developed by Landau and Khalatnikov, the approach of long-range order to equilibrium can be characterized by a relaxation time with a temperature dependence of the form: τ=β/(Tc − T), where β is constant and Tc is a second-order phase transition temperature. The ferroelectric material, triglycine…

When spider webs were left intact in the aluminum-glass boxes in the laboratory, most animals ate old webs daily and built new ones. The new webs were built with a larger amount of thread protein, increasing steadily in weight with increasing length of the non-elimination period, to more than 3 times in 8 days. The in…

The principles of plain-weave geometry established by Peirce1 and Kemp2 are extended to weaves other than plain to give a system of fabric geometry applicable to all types of woven cloths. A particular application of the system to the measurement and specification of fabric tightness is also described.
