The theory of open quantum systems is used to study the local temperature and heat currents in metallic nanowires connected to leads at different temperatures. We show that for ballistic wires the local temperature is almost uniform along the wire and Fourier's law is invalid. By gradually increasing disorder, a unifo…

A well-aligned semiconducting organic nanowire assembly is obtained by a simple, one-step soft lithographic method (see image). A patterned nanowire assembly that forms J-type intermolecular aggregation shows high birefringence, dichroism, polarized emission, and electrical conductivity (4.9 × 10−6 S cm−1).

A phase-field model of nonisothermal solidification in dilute binary alloys is used to study the variation of growth velocity, dendrite tip radius, and radius selection parameter as a function of Lewis number at fixed undercooling. By the application of advanced numerical techniques, we have been able to extend the an…

The authors report on hydrophobic self-cleaning surfaces of transparent zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films tuned by controlling uniformity of the film surfaces. ZnO films were synthesized by a simple, low-cost sol–gel technique. The degree of hydrophobicity of the films was strongly dependent on the number of coatings with Z…

The retention of deuterium (D) fuel in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak is studied using a new 'static' gas balance method. C-Mod solely employs high-Z molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) for its plasma facing materials, with intermittent application of thin boron (B) films. The primarily Mo surfaces are found…

This work reviews published structural and kinetic data on the pyridine nucleotide-linked beta-hydroxyacid oxidative decarboxylases. The family of metal ion-dependent pyridine nucleotide-linked beta-hydroxyacid oxidative decarboxylases can be divided into two structural families with the malic enzyme, which has an (S)…

Abstract Nanoporous materials hold great potential for improving the performance of biosensors due to their large available surface area and their capability for size‐selective infiltration. One of the principal challenges associated with the use of nanopores is achieving efficient infiltration of molecules whose size…

Extraordinary oxygen ordering and mobility have been found in an oxygen-nonstoichiometric mixed-valence cobalt oxide, YBaCo(4)O(8.5). The excess oxygen atoms appear to be incorporated in an orderly way into the YBaCo(4)O(7) parent lattice with different configurations as the oxygen content varies. Intense electron-bea…
