Activation volume and density of mobile dislocations in plastically deforming nanocrystalline Ni

Yinmin Wang、A. V. Hamza、E. Ma2005-06-10Applied Physics Letters

We report the analysis of repeated transients to monitor the coupled evolution of dislocation velocity and mobile dislocation density in plastically deforming nanocrystalline Ni. The stress relaxation series allowed the determination of the physical activation volume, indicating a rate-controlling mechanism different…

Role of Molecular Interaction in Stability of Celecoxib−PVP Amorphous Systems

Piyush Gupta、Ramasamy Thilagavathi、Asit K. Chakraborti 等 4 位作者2005-06-10Molecular Pharmaceutics

Stabilization of an amorphous solid against devitrification can be achieved using additives that interact specifically with the parent molecule, and restrain it from rearranging into a crystal lattice. The amorphous form of celecoxib (CEL) was stabilized by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), both in the solid state and dur…

Rydberg transition frequencies from the Local Density Approximation

Adam Wasserman、Kieron Burke2005-06-10arXiv

A method is given that extracts accurate Rydberg excitations from LDA density functional calculations, despite the short-ranged potential. For the case of He and Ne, the asymptotic quantum defects predicted by LDA are in less than 5% error, yielding transition frequency errors of less than 0.1eV.

Diameter-Selective Solubilization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Reversible Cyclic Peptides

Alfonso Ortiz-Acevedo、Hui Xie、Vasiliki Zorbas 等 9 位作者2005-06-10Journal of the American Chemical Society

We have utilized reversible cyclic peptides (RCPs)-peptides containing alternating l- and d-amino acids with N- and C-termini derivatized with thiol-containing groups allowing reversible peptide cyclization-to solubilize and noncovalently functionalize carbon single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) in aqueous solution. The relaxor ferroelectric PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) (PMN) is investigated by means of dielectric and Fourier transform far infrared transmission spectroscopy in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 15 THz at temperatures between 20 and 900 K using mostly thin films on infrared transparent sapphire substrates. While the thin…

Negative refractive index metamaterials from inherently non-magnetic materials for deep infrared to terahertz frequency ranges

Vassilios Yannopapas、Alexander Moroz2005-06-10Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

We present a new set of artificial structures which can exhibit a negative refractive index band in excess of 6% in a broad frequency range from the deep infrared to the terahertz region. The structures are composites of two different kinds of non-overlapping spheres, one made from inherently non-magnetic polaritonic…

Symmetry analysis of k = (1/3,1/3,0) three-sublattice ordering in A14B51 compounds

P. Fischer、V. Pomjakushin、L. Keller 等 7 位作者2005-06-10arXiv

Bulk magnetic, X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline Tb14Ag51 in the temperature range from 1.5 K to room temperature. Its chemical Gd14Ag51 type structure corresponds to space group P6/m. Combined with group theoretical symmetry analysis, we show that the magnetic structure of t…

Low Field Magnetotransport in Manganites

P. K. Siwach、H. K. Singh、O. N. Srivastava2005-06-10arXiv

The perovskite manganites of general formula RE_1-xAe_xMnO_3 (RE= rare earth,AE=Ca, Sr, Ba and Pb)have drawn considerable attention, especially following the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). They exhibit extraordinary large magnetoresistance pronounced as CMR in the vicinity of insulator-metal/paramagnet…

Rolling friction and bistability of rolling motion

Thorsten Poeschel、Thomas Schwager、Nikolai Brilliantov 等 4 位作者2005-06-10arXiv

The rolling motion of a rigid cylinder on an inclined flat viscous surface is investigated and the nonlinear resistance force against rolling, $F_R(v)$, is derived. For small velocities $F_R(v)$ increases with velocity due to increasing deformation rate of the surface material. For larger velocity it decreases with ve…

Collision of Adhesive Viscoelastic Particles

Nikolai V. Brilliantov、Thorsten Poeschel2005-06-10arXiv

The collision of convex bodies is considered for small impact velocity, when plastic deformation and fragmentation may be disregarded. In this regime the contact is governed by forces according to viscoelastic deformation and by adhesion. The viscoelastic interaction is described by a modified Hertz law, while for the…

Adhesive interactions of viscoelastic spheres

Nikolai V. Brilliantov、Thorsten Poeschel2005-06-10arXiv

We develop an analytical theory of adhesive interaction of viscoelastic spheres in quasistatic approximation. Deformations and deformation rates are assumed to be small, which allows for the application of the Hertz contact theory, modified to account for viscoelastic forces. The adhesion interactions are described by…
