We calculate a current rectification by molecules containing a conjugated molecular group sandwiched between two saturated (insulating) molecular groups of different length (molecular quantum dot) using an ab-initio non-equilibrium Green's function method. In particular, we study S-(CH2)m-C10H6-(CH2)n-S dithiol with N…

The possibilities to fractionate copolymers with respect to their chemical composition on a preparative scale by means of the establishment of liquid/liquid phase equilibria were studied for random copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile (san). Experiments with solutions of san in toluene have shown that fractionation…

The piezoelectric, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of highly (111)-textured, 200-nm-thick polycrystalline lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films have been investigated as a function of Zr/Ti ratio. The distinct peak in piezoelectric coefficient at the morphotropic phase boundary found in bulk PZT ceramics is not…

Magnetotransport measurements performed on several well-characterized highly oriented pyrolitic graphite and single crystalline Kish graphite samples reveal a reentrant metallic behavior in the basal-plane resistance at high magnetic fields, when only the lowest Landau levels are occupied. The results suggest that the…

Extending to continuous potentials a cleaving wall molecular dynamics simulation method recently developed for the hard-sphere system [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 4751 (2000)], we calculate the crystal–melt interfacial free energies, γ, for a Lennard-Jones system as functions of both crystal orientation and temperature. At t…

Abstract Film extrusion and welding of biodegradable polymer films are important processes that must be considered in the development of compostable packaging materials. Film extrusion of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has proved to be rather difficult because of its brittleness, but the flexibility of PLA can be improved by…

We report first-principles calculations of zinc-blende half-metals, identifying systems for epitaxial growth with semiconductors, and present calculations for CrAs/GaAs multilayers. We find that half-metallicity is conserved troughout the heterostructure, making this a good candidate for spintronics applications.

The massive-band effects on screening behavior of metallic carbon nanotubes are theoretically investigated using two different methods; continuous and lattice quantum theories. Both approaches show screening of a localized external perturbation with an effective screening length of the order of the nanotube diameter.…

The transport properties of diamond thin films are well known to be sensitive to the sp2/sp3-bonded carbon ratio, the presence of the grain boundaries and other defects, and to the presence of various impurities. In order to clarify the roles these factors play in the conduction mechanisms of nitrogen-doped ultrananoc…
