Thermal diffusivity of dispersed composites

H. J. Lee、Rex N. Taylor1976-01-01Journal of Applied Physics

The thermal diffusivity of a series of copper whiskers-copper spheres dispersed in solder was measured by the flash method at room temperature. These diffusivity values are compared with the calculated thermal diffusivity values using effective thermal conductivity values computed with Maxwell’s dispersion equation. T…

The magnetic barkhausen effect

J.C. McClure、Klaus Schröder1976-01-01C R C Critical Reviews in Solid State Sciences

When the magnetization of a ferromagnet (in this paper “ferromagnet” will often include “fernmagnet”) is changed under the influence of an applied magnetic field, the magnetization, particularly in the vicinity of the coercive force, is not smooth function of the field but rather shows a structure composed of many ind…

Effect of solute size and shape on orientational order in liquid crystal systems

Bengt Kronberg、D. F. R. Gilson、Donald Patterson1976-01-01Journal of the Chemical Society Faraday Transactions 2 Molecular and Chemical Physics

Wide-line n.m.r. has been used to obtain the order parameter, S, as a function of temperature, for nematic p-methoxybenzylidine-p-n-butylaniline (MBBA) containing solutes of differing size and shape. These consisted of : (i) anisotropic molecules, capable of correlating their orientations with MBBA molecules, viz n-he…

An evaluation of cation exchange capacity measurements for soils in the tropics

A. S. R. Juo、S.A. Ayanlaja、J. A. Ogunwale1976-01-01Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis

Comparisons of CEC and exchange acidity neasurements were made on a group of selected West African soils using three commonly used analytical procedures, namely, neutral‐acetate displacement, BaCl2‐TEA leaching at pH 8, and unbuffered KCl extraction. The three methods gave large differences in CEC values which followe…

Controlled Surface Flaws in Hot‐Pressed SiC

J. J. Petrovic、L.A. Jacobson1976-01-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Controlled semi‐elliptical surface flaws were produced in hot‐pressed SiC by Knoop microhardness indentation. Flawed specimens were placed in 4‐point bending in order to determine their critical stress intensity factor, K IC , at both room and high temperatures. Room‐temperature fracture and K IC values after annealin…

Some Effects of Small Changes in Molecular Framework on the Incidence of Smectic C and Other Smectic Liquid Crystal Phases in Esters

G. W. Gray、John W. Goodby1976-01-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The smectic properties are discussed for several series of esters which have the same “central core” molecular structure, i.e., The effects of just extending the carbon chain in a series of n-alkyl esters are discussed for the methyl to n-decyl esters of 4′n-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid. The effect on the inicid…

Tilted alignment of MBBA induced by short-chain surfactants

G. Porte1976-01-01Journal de physique

Alignments induced by short chained surfactants in MBBA are observed : tilted orientations with different tilt angles. The anchoring energies associated with this type of alignment are approximately measured. In the last section, interpretations of the rather complex mechanisms involved are proposed.

Properties of Poly(tetramethylene Oxide)-Poly(tetramethylene Terephthalate) block polymers

Amnuey Lilaonitkul、James C. West、Stuart L. Cooper1976-01-01Journal of Macromolecular Science Part B

Properties of block copolymers were studied by SALS, dynamic mechanical testing, DSC, and stress-strain and dichroism experiments. Crystallization of hard segments provides a superstructure for the elastomer phase consisting of uncrystallized hard and soft segments.

The Photooxidative Degradation of Polypropylene. Part II. Photostabilization Mechanisms

D. J. Carlsson、D. M. Wiles1976-01-01Journal of macromolecular science. Part C, Reviews in macromolecular chemistry and physics/Journal of macromolecular science. Reviews in macromolecular chemistry and physics

All polymeric materials photodegrade to a greater or lesser extent on exposure to terrestrial sunlight in the presence of oxygen. For most commercially important polymers, some form of photo-stabilization is essential if adequate outdoor lifetimes are to be achieved. This has led to the development of many UV stabiliz…

Chemistry of soil aluminum

E. O. McLean1976-01-01Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis

Better understanding of soil aluminum has had dramatic effects on the interpretation of many aspects of soil chemistry. Aluminum is a Group III element, metallic in nature, and exhibits both ionic and cuvaient bonding. It is the most plentiful of all metallic cations of the earth's crust. It is released from octahedra…

Structure and Properties of Oriented Polymers

I M Ward (ed) London: Applied Science 1915 pp xv + 500 price £18 In the main, the scope of this book and its coverage of the various aspects of the subject do justice to the title. However, it is a little disappointing that consideration of high-modulus forms of oriented polymers is virtually confined to the aromaticp…

Quasielastic scattering by dilute polymer solutions

Ziya Akcasu、H. Gurol1976-01-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract The scattering law S ( k , w ) for dilute polymer solutions is obtained from Kirkwood's diffusion equation via the projection operator technique. The width Ω( k ) of S ( k ,w) is obtained for all k without replacing the Oseen tensor by its average (as is done in the Rouse–Zimm model) using the “spring‐bead” m…

Weak-beam study of dislocation structures in fatigued copper

J. Antonopoulos、A.T. Winter1976-01-01Philosophical magazine

Single crystals of pure copper oriented for single slip were fatigued to saturation at low constant plastic strain amplitude. A weak-beam study of the dislocation microstructures revealed a very high density of dipoles in both the ‘wall’ and ‘matrix’ structures. Secondary dislocations were not observed

Gelation‐crystallization in isotactic polystyrene solutions and its implications to crystal morphology, to the origin and structure of gels, and to the chemical homogeneity of polyolefins

Marco Di Girolamo、A. Keller、Keizo Miyasaka 等 4 位作者1976-01-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract As part of a wider study on the crystallization of isotactic polystyrene solutions it was observed that at sufficient concentrations (> 3–5%) gelation sets in below a certain (very high) supercooling in competition with the usual single crystal formation which in itself produces turbid suspensions. It was…
