Chemical Durability of Fluoride Glasses: I, Reaction of Fluorozirconate Glasses with Water

Catherine J. Simmons、Joseph H. Simmons1986-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The chemical durability of five flouarozirconate glass compositions was studied. Measurements of leachant composition and solution chemistry by plasma emission spettroscopy, pH, and fluoride analysis are reported. Changes in surface structure were monitored by scanning electron microscopy, electron‐probe X‐ray analysi…

EPR study of vanadium (4+) in the anatase and rutile phases ofTiO2

R. Gallay、J. J. van der Klink、Jacques‐E. Moser1986-09-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We present cw and pulsed EPR experiments on ${\mathrm{V}}^{4+}$ in the rutile and anatase phases of ${\mathrm{TiO}}_{2}$. For the rutile phase, the cw data confirm earlier results, but the relaxation data are different from those previously reported. No earlier results for ${\mathrm{V}}^{4+}$ in the unreduced pure ana…

Kinetics of sodium bicarbonate decomposition

Wangyu Hu、J. M. Smith、Timur Doğu 等 4 位作者1986-09-01AIChE Journal

Abstract A thermal gravimetric method was used to measure rates of decomposition of NAHCO 3 particles. Such decomposition produces a highly porous Na 2 Co 3 that reacts with SO 2 rapidly and completely at moderate temperatures. Hence, NaHCO 3 decomposition provides a reactant with attractive features for SO 2 removal.…

Measurements of the Bend and Splay Elastic Constants of Octyl-Cyanobiphenyl

Stephen W. Morris、Peter Palffy‐Muhoray、David A. Balzarini1986-09-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

The bend (K33) and splay (k11 elastic constants of octylcyanobiphenyl have been measured as a function of temperature using the electric field induced Freedericksz transition. We have made simultaneous measurements of the dielectric constants and birefringence of 8CB using a cell with homogeneous alignment. Dielectric…

Effect of carbon content on hydrogen occlusivity and embrittlement of ferrite–pearlite steels

S.L.I. Chan、J. A. Charles1986-09-01Materials Science and Technology

Experiments on a series of pure Fe–C alloys consisting of ferrite and pearlite only have shown that the ferrite/pearlite and pearlite/pearlite interfaces are effective hydrogen trapping sites. The ferrite/cementite interfaces within the pearlite colonies, however, have little effect on the hydrogen occlusivity. With a…

Mechanism of in vitro collagen fibril assembly. Kinetic and morphological studies.

G C Na、Linda J. Butz、Robert J. Carroll1986-09-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

The kinetics of in vitro fibril assembly of Type I collagen preparations that contain different amounts of covalently cross-linked oligomers was studied with turbidimetry. Fibril formation showed a lag phase with no solution turbidity and a growth phase with a sigmoidal increase in the solution turbidity. The length o…

Role of Minerals in Thermal Alteration of Organic Matter—II: A Material Balance

ELI TANNENBAUM、BRADLEY J. HUIZINGA、I.R. KAPLAN1986-09-01AAPG Bulletin

ABSTRACT Pyrolysis experiments were performed on Green River and Monterey Formation kerogens (Types I and II, respectively) with and without calcite, illite, or montmorillonite at 300 °C for 2 to 1,000 hours under dry and hydrous conditions. Pyrolysis products were identified and quantified, and a material balance of…

The Role of Oxygen Mass Transfer in the Erosion-Corrosion of Slurry Pipelines

J. Postlethwaite、M. H. Dobbin、Kevin Bergevin1986-09-01CORROSION

The erosion-corrosion of vertical 38-mm diameter pipes carrying aerated slurry (20 vol% – 30 + 50 mesh silica sand) in 3.13% NaCl solution at 2 to 6 m/s has been measured by weight loss measurements over periods of 100 h. Electrochemical methods have been applied to clarify the mechanism of the process and to determin…

Scale microfossils from the Early Cambrian of northwest Canada

Carol Wagner Allison、Jerry W. Hilgert1986-09-01Journal of Paleontology

Scale microfossils are locally abundant in rocks of the uppermost Tindir Group and basal beds of the overlying Funnel Creek Limestone in northwest Canada. Co-occurring organic-walled fossils in this microbial mat biota resemble forms described from the Upper Proterozoic but mineralized spicules of Cambrian aspect are…

Abstract A method is given for quantitative analysis of IR spectra of dioctahedral micas in the OH-stretching region, which involves spectral decomposition and correlation of octahedral cation contents with integrated optical densities of the corresponding bands. It provides a basis for the study of order-disorder in…
