We derive the modified Young's equation for the contact angle of a fluid droplet on a rigid substrate using an interface displacement model and identify the line tension with the excess free energy per unit length calculated previously for a straight three-phase contact line.

The electrochemistry of a chemically prepared polypyrrole/poly(styrene-4-sulfonate) powder has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy in a variety of aqueous electrolytes. The facile p-doping/undoping of thick layers of the polymer composite is shown to be due to the high ionic conductivity…

Anionic ring-opening polymerization of ε-thionocaprolactone was examined. When organolithiums, Grignard reagents, and lithium tert -butoxide were used as the initiators, the corresponding polythiocarboxylic- O -ester was selectively formed. When potassium tert -butoxide and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) wer…

The contributions to the thermodynamics of liquid SPC/E water from its inherent structures have been determined over a broad range of temperature and density (220−500 K, 0.8−1.25 g/cm 3 ). Molecular dynamics simulations of shifted-force SPC/E water give a retracing locus of density maxima in the equilibrium liquid wit…

We present “design rules” for the selection of molecules to achieve electronic control over semiconductor surfaces, using a simple molecular orbital model. The performance of most electronic devices depends critically on their surface electronic properties, i.e., surface band-bending and surface recombination velocity…

Thiol-capped CdTe nanocrystals with cubic zinc blende structure are synthesized in aqueous solution. Their steady-state and time-resolved luminescence characteristics are studied at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. A strong exciton luminescence peak at 2.3 eV dominates the emission spectrum of CdTe nanocrystals…

Most materials either are specialty materials that find usage in small niche areas or commodity materials that have a few huge markets. This is as true for plastics as it is for other material systems. Whether we look at large-volume commodity plastics or low-volume specialty plastics, most tend to fit the 80:20 rule.…
