Magnetic and some thermal properties of chalcogenides of Pr and Tm and a few other rare earths

E. Bücher、K. Andres、F. J. Di Salvo 等 7 位作者1975-01-01Physical review. B, Solid state

The magnetic properties of all known sulfides, selenides, and tellurides of Pr and Tm (as representative of the light and heavy rare earths, respectively) have been studied. In most cases, Pr and Tm compounds exhibit Van Vleck paramgnetism at low temperatures owing to crystal-field singlet ground states. Splittings ha…

Theory of Periodic Dielect Waveguides

S.T. Peng、T. Tamir、H.L. Bertoni1975-01-01IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques

The propagation of electromagnetic waves along open periodic, dielectric waveguides is formulated here as a rigorous and exact boundary-value problem. The characteristic field solutions are shown to be of the surface-wave or leaky-wave type, depending on the ratio of periodicity to wavelength (d/lambda). The dispersio…

The Orowan mechanism in anisotropic crystals

R.O. Scattergood、David Bacon1975-01-01Philosophical magazine

The static equilibrium configurations of a dislocation bypassing a periodic row of impenetrable circular obstacles were obtained for various crystals by means of a self-stress method wherein the elastic anisotropy of the crystal and the dislocation self-interaction could be taken into account. A correlation was develo…

Energy gap law in the solvent isotope effect on radiationless transitions of rare earth ions

Gabriel Stein、Elhanan Würzberg1975-01-01OpenAlex

Data on the fluorescent yields of tervalent ions of Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Tm in H2O and D2O, containing perchlorate ions, and isotope effects on the fluorescence are reported. The results are interpreted in terms of the mechanisms responsible for radiationless processes in solutions of rare earth ions [Y. Haas a…

Defects associated with the accommodation of misfit between crystals

J. W. Matthews1975-01-01OpenAlex

A substantial fraction of the defects in epitaxial thin films are formed to accommodate part of the misfit between the stress−free lattice parameters of film and substrate. This paper describes some of the complete dislocations, partial dislocations, and cracks that are made for this purpose. Also described are the op…

Optical studies of the vibrational properties of disordered solids

A. S. Barker、A. J. Sievers1975-01-01OpenAlex

Since approximately 1950 an increasing portion of experimental solid state physics research has been concerned with studying defects in crystals. This trend might appear to be a rather belated recognition that most of the materials we come into contact with have a random structure. In fact the theoretical understandin…

Chemical shifts of Auger lines, and the Auger parameter

C. D. Wagner1975-01-01OpenAlex

Earlier observations on the magnitudes of chemical shifts of photoelectron and core-type Auger lines, and the concept of the role of polarizability, have been combined to produce a unified concept of the role of polarization in determining line position. With core-type Auger lines, polarization effects are more import…

Co-operative Jahn-Teller effects

G A Gehring、K. A. Gehring1975-01-01OpenAlex

The co-operative Jahn-Teller effect is a phase transition which is driven by the interaction between localized orbital electronic states and the crystal lattice. The possible origins, symmetries and properties of the electron-lattice interactions and how they lead to possible hamiltonians for the coupled system are di…

Ferroelectric liquid crystals

Robert B. Meyer、L. Liébert、L. Strzelecki 等 4 位作者1975-01-01OpenAlex

A general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p'-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric. Some of the properties of this new class of ferro-electrics are discussed.

The interpolytypic transition from the IT to the 2H modification in the TaS2 system is shown to be a shear transformation. A transformation mechanism is proposed based on partial dislocation movement along successive glide planes. The same mechanism accounts for the observed simultaneous formation of polytypes other t…
