According to Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, ‘Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.’ The ideas and suggestions presented in this chapter do not quite satisfy Szent-Gyorgyi’s paradigm, since some new facts were added to the older data. However, the previously available…
Abstract The major processes of the pulp and paper industry are overviewed with particular emphasis given to existing chemical requirements; processing trends are identified which may affect future chemical requirements. The pulp and paper industry represents a vast market for chemicals. On the papermaking side, overa…
A study is reported in which fancy yarns were made by the wrap-spinning process with a range of machine conditions and fibre supplies. The initial exploration identified the important control parameters and showed up characteristic yarn features. A particular bouclé-derivative yarn was especially interesting and was t…

Abstract Difunctional isocyanates blocked with ϵ‐caprolactam and oximes are tested as curing agents in poly‐(urethane‐ureas) prepregs formulations. With ϵ‐caprolactam blocking agent the temperature of dissociation is around 20–40°C higher than with 2‐butanone oxime. Polymerizable blocking agents are proposed for the d…
Infrared and Raman spectra of 2-mercaptoimidazole and 2-mercaptothiazole in solid state as well as i.r. spectra of 2-mercaptothiazole in HCCl 3 and CS 2 0.05M solutions have been investigated. A general assignment of all the observed bands is proposed for both fundamental vibrations and for overtone and combination ba…
Swelling of U{sub 3}Si and U{sub 3}Si{sub 2} is analyzed. The growth of fission gas bubbles appears to be affected by fission rate, fuel loading, and microstructural change taking place in the fuel compounds during irradiation. Several mechanisms are explored to explain the observations. The present work is aimed at a…
To utilize the inhibition effect of magnetic field on metal dissolution, it was required to be examined in the flowing conditions of solutions. A 100cm3 of 0.015mol dm-3 nitric acid solution for zinc and of 1.5mol dm-3 nitric acid solution for copper and brass were used respectively. The flowing rate of solutions were…
Abstract A computer program for semiquantitative mineral analysis used by the U.S. Geological Survey was designed in 1972 by J. C. Hathaway and translated into Fortran language for the IBM-360–65 computer by R. W. Bowen, both of the Geological Survey. Since then, the program has been upgraded and adapted for other com…
SummaryThe inherent lightness and good strength to weight ratio of aluminium is important in aerospace fields. Gold plating is required where a stable coating should have good electrical conductivity and/or low infrared emissivity. Aluminium and its alloys require special surface preparation for successful electrodepo…
Abstract The effect of irregularity of chemical structure on melting points, densities and crystal structures was studied for 6–66 and 6–68 copolyamides. All copolyamides showed V‐shaped melting point vs. composition curves. The densities, corrected for the difference in molecular weights between comonomers, also show…
Thin films of metal phthalocyanines (PbPc and RuPc) on inorganic substrates (Ag, Pt, Cu, Au, Al203 and Agl) In the submonolayer and monolayer range were investigated. Their chemical compositions and electronic and dynamic structures were characterized by means of photoemission and vibrational spectroscopy, with partic…
Interconversion reactions among the solids SiO 2 (quartz and fused), γ-AlOOH (boehmite), CsAlSiO 4 , CsAlSi 2 O 6 (pollucite), and CsAlSi 5 O 12 , in contact with aqueous solutions at 200 °C, have been investigated. Results support earlier suggestions that CsAlSi 5 O 12 is not stable with respect to CsAlSi 2 O 6 + SiO…
Fracture toughness of polycrystalline alumina and ceria partially stabilized tetragonal zirconia (CeO2-TZP) ceramics were assessed in combined mode I and mode II loading using precracked disk specimens in diametral compression. Stress states ranging from pure mode I, combined mode I and mode II, and pure mode II were…
The structural aspects of the AlCl3–SOCl2 system have been examined by vibrational spectroscopy. The SOCl2 molecule exhibits amphoteric character, i.e. it can act simultaneously as a donor through the oxygen atom and as an acceptor through the sulphur atom. The liquid state contains loosely bound, open-chain dimers/ol…
Lenses with a homogeneously aligned liquid crystal having a Fresnel structure have been prepared by using a nematic with a positive dielectric anisotropy. Their focal length can be varied continuously from the value fe for an extraordinary ray to f o for an ordinary ray by applying an electric field across the lens ce…
Japanese LWRs have experienced several troubles caused by corrosions of structural materials in the past ca. 20 years of their operational history, among which are increase in the occupational radiation exposures, intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of stainless steel piping in BWR, and steam generator cor…
Correlation between occupancy and temperature factors during the refinement of a disordered molecule is discussed on the basis of their effects on an atomic scattering factor curve. When the resolution of the data is limited, occupancy and temperature factors affect scattering-factor curves in a similar fashion, and t…
