We report X-ray diffraction, density, ultrasonic velocity and refractive index studies in the N(p-n-pentyloxy benzylidene) p-n-alkylaniline compounds, viz. 50.5, 50.6 and 50.7. The nematic-smectic A (NA) transition is found to be weak first order in 50.6 while it is second order in 50.5 and 50.7. The salient features…

X-ray analysis of wavefunctions by the least-squares method incorporating orthonormality. I. General formalism

Kazuo Tanaka1988-11-01Acta Crystallographica Section A Foundations of Crystallography

The least-squares method incorporating orthonormal relation between wavefunctions is formulated. The method fulfils the idempotency condition and allows the representation of wavefunctions to be obtained from charge-density distributions measured by the X-ray diffraction method. The present method can be applied to bo…

Measurements of empty cell gap for liquid-crystal displays using interferometric methods

Kai Yang1988-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

In order to determine the empty cell gap of a liquid-crystal (LC) cell to better than 1% accuracy, the empty LC cell has been modeled as an optical medium consisting of seven layers with an air gap representing the true cell gap in the middle layer. The given index of refraction and thickness for each layer, optical r…

Structural Aspects of Phase Equilibria in the Strontium‐Titanium‐Oxygen System

Krishna Udayakumar、Alastair N. Cormack1988-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Energies of formation of the members of the homologous series SrO · nSrTiO 3 , through a Ruddlesden‐Popper type of superlattice ordering, have been examined by employing atomistic computer simulation techniques. Results of the calculations have been shown to provide a theoretical basis for the observation that a limit…

Analysis of Raman spectra of ZnWO4 single crystals

Y. Liu、H. Wang、G. Chen 等 6 位作者1988-11-01Journal of Applied Physics

The first-order Raman spectra of ZnWO4 single crystals have been obtained. All the vibrational frequencies are assigned by group theory. Among them the Bg modes at 269, 166, and 147 cm−1 and Ag mode at 124 cm−1 are reported for the first time. In view of x-ray structure data of ZnWO4, we suggest that the frequencies o…

PHOTODYNAMIC SENSITIZERS FROM CHLOROPHYLL:PURPURIN–18 AND CHLORINp6

J. Kenneth Hoober、Theodore W. Sery、Nobuto Yamamoto1988-11-01Photochemistry and Photobiology

Abstract— Two easily prepared derivatives of chlorophyll,purpurin–18 and chlorin p 6 , are potent sensitizers of cell killing by low‐intensity red light. The internal anhydride group inpurpurin–18 provides the potential of covalently linking in one step the chlorin to cell targeting agents such as antibodies.

Reflectivity of multidielectric coatings deposited on the end facet of a weakly guiding dielectric slab waveguide

C. Vassallo1988-11-01Journal of the Optical Society of America A

The reflectivity of a multilayer dielectric coating deposited upon the end facet of a symmetrical dielectric slab waveguide is investigated for both TE and TM waves. The integral equation satisfied by the field in the junction plane is solved numerically through a Fourier representation and an iteration process. The p…

Effect of drawing on the α relaxation of poly(vinyl alcohol)

Paul D. Garrett、David T. Grubb1988-11-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract The α relaxation of isotropic and drawn poly(vinyl alcohol) dried gel films was studied using dynamic mechanical analysis. The temperature of the relaxation T α increased from 160°C in the isotropic gel to 220°C in a fiber drawn 19 ×. The relaxation, which is associated with the crystalline regions of the mat…
