トロポノイドの構造的な特徴を活かした機能物質として, トロポノイドジチオクラウンエーテル, トロポノイドアザマクロサイクル, トロポノイド液晶並びにオイルゲル化剤を合成した。トロポノイドジチオクラウンエーテルは高い水銀 (II) イオン親和性を示し, 液膜輸送における優れた水銀 (II) イオンキャリアとして利用できた。トロポノイドアザマクロサイクルは特定のゲストカチオン存在下で, その色調が変化することから, アミノトロポン構造はクロモフォアとして利用できることを見出した。これらトロポノイドを基盤にした機能物質 (水銀イオン液膜輸送キャリア, クロモイオノフォア, 液晶, オイルゲル化剤) の機能や機能発現機構を解明した。
